History Bowl and Bee

On Sunday, November 23rd, the middle school History club attended the regional competition of the History Bowl and Bee. The competition took place at Shanghai American School (SAS). SHSID brought three teams of middle school students; each team was composed of four participants.

The History Bowl consists of four rounds. The first round is made up of toss-ups, the second is made up of bonus questions for each correctly answered toss-up; the third round is the lightning round where each team answers six questions on a designated topic, and the fourth round is the thirty twenty ten round—the number of points the question is worth depends on when the question is answered.

The results were as follows: Pudong C, or the SAS team, came first, while Shanghai A and Shanghai C came second in a deadlock—all three teams will be able to enter the second round in Thailand in 2015.

At the History Bee, students are on their own. Each has a buzzer and is given a chance to answer questions, out of a total of 25 tossups. The students with the most points win and move onto the second round. However this is more challenging as each student answers by themselves without anyone else to rely on.

Overall, the History Bee and Bowl was a heated competition and a memorable learning experience.
