Grade 9: a lecture about UCLA

Mr. Kevin Hostetler, the Senior Assistant Director of International Admissions at University of California, Los Angeles, came to SHSID and gave a presentation about UCLA in the auditorium. Located in a grand city, UCLA is a top-rated university with outstanding academics, students who create strong bonds with one another, and a beautiful campus. Their students, coming from over forty countries and do not only meet UCLA’s high academic standards but are also active, valuable contributors to campus life. In addition, the students are all talented in their own ways—be it basketball or painting; yet, they are all tied together with one common thread—their passion to explore all that UCLA has to offer. After a brief introduction of the university, Mr. Hostetler opened himself to students’ questions who all actively asked thoughtful questions, especially the seniors. One of them asked how UCLA is different from other universities in the UC system. Mr. Kevin elaborated on the topic and gave detailed information about how the nine universities in the UC system have different majors to offer. UCLA, for example, is well known for its engineering courses while other UC universities don’t even offer the course. He then developed the topic even further; talking about choosing the college that best fits the student instead of the one with the highest ranking. Everyone benefited from his well delivered presentation.
