8th Grade Bio Lab Assistant Group
8th Grade Bio Lab Assistant Group
A new program, known as “Service and Learning” has been introduced this semester to promote students’ community service activities and participation. The main purpose is to improve students’ critical thinking, morals and responsibility using genuine experiences. Our school provides comprehensive subjects for students to choose, and this time we focused on the Bio Lab Assistant Group (BLAG).
BLAG is a type of service learning that requires both physical and mental exercise. Volunteers sacrifice their precious time after lunch to help the teachers in the lab building. Students do all kinds of cleaning and preparation, including washing burettes, wiping beakers, scrubbing slides, and cleaning the labs. Although the semester has only been going on for less than two months, students from all classes have already participated in this program. Most of them are punctual and finish their duties with high standards. The teachers informed us about the different steps and things to pay extra attention to for the corresponding jobs, while inspecting us with discretion. Every student is responsible to write what he or she did and express his or her feelings about this program.
I participated in this service and learning program personally, and was appointed to wash the burettes. There were other volunteers, and everyone wore a pair of gloves to avoid unnecessary danger. There were at least 50 burettes in the sterile water that the teacher had prepared earlier, and I was supposed to clean every stain by squeezing really hard. The teachers also rectified our mistakes during the process.
The program was not difficult, but teachers had to accomplish all of the time consuming jobs for students to learn. In my opinion, launching BLAG is a wise choice because students can learn and experience different aspects of science, and most importantly, it helps us understand the importance and greatness of education.
