SHSID Middle School WSC Competition at YK Pao

The seniors and juniors of SHSID both competed in the World Scholar’s Cup team competition at YK Pao on Sunday, accompanied by Mr. Samuelson and Ms. Morris. The juniors’ topic was “Thoughtful World, Troubled Mind.” The students competed in four rounds of competition: Scholar’s Challenge, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Bowl, and Team Debate. The scholar’s challenge was basically a long test on the topic. The collaborative writing round entailed each student’s writing of an essay that was then edited by his or her group members. The scholar’s bowl is like a quiz bowl, where each team has a buzzer and can answer questions during the competition. In the team debate round, one team debated another team on a topic neither had seen before after fifteen minutes of preparation.

The SHSID junior team brought home many awards. The team that won first prize overall was from SHSID; its members were Cindy Zhao, Jeffery Tseng, and Amy Zhou. The Top Scholar Award went to Wilson Liang. The SHSID juniors also brought home many individual awards and won the first prize for the team debate and scholar’s bowl.
