Primary and Middle School English Department: PBA Spotlight

June 13, 2024

Recently at the Puxi campus, Grade 7 S and S+ English students put on an impressive mock trial based on the play 12 Angry Men. As the lights dimmed and the curtains drew back, students transformed into characters of justice, truth, and doubt. The stage was set for the mock trial, a departure from the usual routine of essays and quizzes in a typical English class. This experience would not only entertain, but also offer students a unique and comprehensive assessment of their argumentative skills.

During the one-week prep and practice phase, each student was fully engaged, working hard to understand the concept of a trial and the art of argument. In the courtroom of the Xian Mian Auditorium, students assumed various roles, from the vibrant defense attorney to the juror wrestling with doubts. As the trial unfolded, each participant showcased a myriad of skills essential for navigating the complexities of justice.

The trial started as the prosecution team conducted a strong opening statement. Each student on stage applied numerous argumentative skills such as counterclaims, ethos, pathos, and logos. The jury struggled to reach a unanimous decision as they held a contentious and impassioned discussion that demonstrated their understanding of the concept of reasonable doubt, bringing up concrete evidence and accosting others for their biases.

Through this mock trial, the students learned how to practically apply their knowledge. More importantly, they developed their analytical skills, public speaking abilities, and teamwork spirit. Learning is no longer confined solely to PPTs and classrooms. This activity was closely connected to real life and allowed students to gain invaluable insights into the human condition and the pursuit of justice, laying a solid foundation for their future learning and their roles and responsible global citizens and independent learners.
