The Summer Highlights of 2024 at SHSID
Despite the blazing sunshine and heatwaves, SHSID has successfully hosted a myriad of exciting activities this summer. The school campus has transformed into a vibrant stage, featuring a diverse array of cultural exchanges and events.
Guests from the University of Pennsylvania Visited Our School
On the morning of July 15th, two guests from the Global Initiative program at the University of Pennsylvania visited Shanghai High School. Dr. Amy Gadsden, Associate Vice Provost for Global Initiatives and Executive Director of Penn China Initiatives, and Lily Zhang, Director of International Student and Scholar Services, engaged in in-depth discussions with Zhang Zehong, Secretary of the CPC of Shanghai High School, Ma Feng, SHSID High School Principal, and Zhang Li, SHSID High School Vice Principal.
The discussions focused on the development histories, teaching characteristics, and diverse student activities of both institutions, showcasing their outstanding achievements and innovative spirit in education. Several SHSID students were also invited to participate in the event. They posed numerous questions to the guests about the studies and career development programs at the University of Pennsylvania, and received patient and detailed answers from the guests.
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Gadsden has an inseparable bond with Shanghai High School. She reminisced about her experience in 1993, when she participated in a summer English camp organized by Shanghai High School as a Yale undergraduate student. During that time, she formed deep friendships with Chinese high school students and gained a more profound understanding of Chinese education. Returning to Shanghai High School, she expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the significant progress the school has made in recent years.
This exchange activity not only strengthened the friendship and cooperation between the University of Pennsylvania and Shanghai High School but also laid a solid foundation for further educational exchanges and cooperation between the two sides.
2024 College Board Summer Institute for International Counselors Held at SHSID
From August 4th to 6th, 2024, the College Board held its 2024 Summer Institute for International Counselors at SHSID. Mr. Ma Feng, the High School Principal of SHSID, delivered the welcome address at the opening ceremony. The training featured admission officers and experts from prestigious U.S. universities, including MIT, Dartmouth, Cornell, the University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University, Georgia Tech, the University of Colorado, and Macalester College. Over the three-day event, College Board experts provided in-depth analyses of current university admissions trends and an overview of the 2024-2025 application season. Attendees participated in a mock admissions exercise, gaining insights into how universities make application decisions. They also had opportunities to network with over 120 international school counselors and admissions officers, fostering mutual learning and collaboration.
On the afternoon of August 6th, the College Board held a public information session at the SHSID auditorium. Eight Admissions officers from MIT, Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn, Indiana University, Georgia Tech, Colorado, and Macalester shared detailed information about their academic programs, campus life, admissions processes, and financial aid opportunities. The session included a Q&A segment, allowing students and parents to directly engage with the officers and better understand the application process.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the College Board for their trust and support. We also appreciate the contributions of the SHSID college counseling team and student volunteers in making this event a success.

The summer buzz continues on campus with a series of engaging events keeping the atmosphere vibrant and exciting. On August 4th, the Seminar on Mathematics Talent Cultivation captivated attendees at the Xianmian Building. Principal Feng Zhigang of Shanghai High School, along with guests and experts from the China Western Mathematics Invitational, led a dynamic discussion, bringing together teachers from both the International and Local Divisions for insightful exchanges on nurturing future mathematical minds.
In the meantime, we extend a heartfelt thank you to the over 40 dedicated faculty members and students from SHSID who selflessly volunteered during the China Western Mathematics Invitational, hosted by the school from August 5th to 11th. Their invaluable efforts played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the competition.
And the excitement continues! On August 11th, SHSID will once again host the highly anticipated 2024 Harvard Summit for Young Leaders in China. We offer our warmest wishes for a successful and inspiring summit that will empower the next generation of leaders.
Looking to the future, SHSID remains steadfast in its commitment to deepening educational reform, addressing emerging challenges in education, and providing superior resources and platforms for student growth and development.
