G9-10 | 2024 Career Day Review

June 4, 2024

SHSID Grades 9-10 Career Day was successfully held on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 29th. We received enthusiastic responses and support from parents and alumni. Both parents and alumni felt that the Career Day event was highly meaningful for the students, as it broadened their horizons during their studies and provided them with real insights from various industries, which would serve as valuable references for their future academic and career choices.

The Career Day event started punctually at 2:20 PM and lasted for one and a half hours. Each parent was required to give two 30-minute lectures to the students, with approximately 10 minutes allocated for a Q&A session. The parents took this Career Day event very seriously; all parents sent their complete speeches to us several days in advance, with some even continually updating their scripts and materials. Several parents had detailed discussions with us before the event, and we were deeply moved by their dedication.

The speakers for this Career Day were mostly experienced experts in various fields, summarizing their years of valuable experience in their talks. The guest speakers came from diverse industries, including healthcare, IT, film, social media, pharmaceuticals, human resources, investment banking, legal affairs, psychology, university research, automotive manufacturing, and beauty industry, among others. Like in previous years, alumni from Shanghai High School International Division also returned to our campus to give wonderful speeches.

In a flash, one and a half hours passed by, during which students actively participated in the question-and-answer session, feeling satisfied yet still eager for more. To gain a deeper understanding of their insights, we randomly interviewed several students. Student S stated that this psychology course had completely refreshed her understanding of the discipline. She realized that psychology was not just about "mind reading" but a professional field with extensive coverage. Through today's learning, she gained a profound understanding of the job content, employment directions, and learning materials of this major. The guest speaker provided detailed introductions to various subfields of psychology, such as sports psychology and educational psychology, which were invaluable to her and served as crucial guidance for her future planning. Student L had the opportunity to interact with a senior dentist during this career-sharing event and received various first-hand dental advice from the expert. One point that particularly struck him was when the senior dentist shared the reasons for choosing dentistry as a career. For him, this was an important reference in determining whether he was suited for this profession. Additionally, this event allowed him to gain insight into the workings of the modern dental system from the perspective of an "insider" in the hospital, rather than what he usually observes as an "outsider." Student C attended a sharing lecture hosted by alumni from New York University, with the theme of "Preparing for the First Year of College and Beyond," focusing on the business field. From his speech, students learned how to apply to schools, emphasizing the importance of crucial information in resumes and writing cover letters for job applications. Furthermore, the students gained a profound understanding of the significance of socializing. During high school, mutual connections create numerous opportunities, support, and enhanced cooperation. Therefore, it is recommended that students build friendships with upperclassmen by participating in coffee chats or small-scale activities to expand their social circles.

With the joint efforts of the TA office, 9/10 grades, and homeroom teachers, this Career Day event concluded successfully. We look forward to continuing our efforts in the coming year, reuniting with our guest speakers at SHSID, and bringing more exciting Career Day events to our students!
