NHS First Online Teaching Session in Henan

September 18, 2024

On September 13, 2024, the SHSID chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) kicked off its first teaching session of the semester with a class of students from Henen Shen Guo Wan Elementary School. Aaron and Chloe led the class and prepared creative drawing activities to help the kids learn basic English skills and have fun through learning.

The session was about making self-introductions with vocabularies such as “name”, “favorite”, and “hobby” in both English and Chinese. Aaron and Chloe started with their own introduction, then encouraged the kids to describe themselves using the same format. This helped the kids practice their speaking skills through casual conversations, which increased their confidence in using the language. Although some of the longer phrases were tough for kids to comprehend and remember, they did a great job picking up individual words and enjoyed interacting with the two instructors.

After the session, Chloe and Aaron shared some helpful feedbacks. They suggested that future sessions can focus on just a few words per class and use more activities to reinforce what’s been taught. Hopefully, these changes would give the kids more time to fully understand and remember the material without feeling rushed. Through this session, team members realized the importance of thinking like beginners and using fun activities as a source of motivation to gradually build up the kids’ language skills. Overall, this first class was a fantastic start, and the team were extremely excited to continue making an impact on these eager learners.
