Middle School Chinese Department | The Exciting Journey to the West, A Showcase of Creativity—G6 Native Chinese Theme Activity
This week, the Sixth Grade Chinese Department held a lecture and textbook drama performance based on the novel "Journey to the West". The event took place in the Zhen Tao Building Auditorium and was inaugurated under the guidance of Ms. Ma Xinyu.
Reading "Journey to the West," one of the four great classical novels, started as a winter holiday assignment last semester. This semester, the teacher led in-depth readings of the text "Sun Wukong Beats the White Bone Spirit" in class, which inspired related activities such as story continuation and a drama performance. These activities aimed to stimulate the students' creative expression, as well as enhance their writing and performance skills.
Before the start of the lecture and performance activities, the host led everyone in reviewing the highlights of the entire event. The appearance of several special guests, including Ms. Shen Ying, Supervisor of Grade 6, brought the atmosphere to a climax. The host warmly welcomed these guests before Ms. Chen Fan, Head of SHSID Middle School Chinese Department, took the stage to present awards to the winners of the writing competition. The students displayed their deep understanding and unique insights into the story of "Journey to the West" through their continuations of the "Eighty-Two Difficulties" narrative, their clever and unexpected ideas breathing new life into the traditional classic. It was evident that the students' creative writing skills were significantly enhanced in the process.
Following this, Ms. Shen Ying, Supervisor of Grade 6, awarded certificates and prizes to the students who won the speech competition. The event then moved to the eagerly anticipated textbook drama presentation segment, where the auditorium was filled with laughter and lively chatter. The award-winning students fully immersed themselves in the roles and content they had written about, vividly sharing their Journey to the West stories, winning enthusiastic applause from the audience. Before the textbook drama presentation segment, Ms. Chen Fan and Ms. Gao Xiaoling, two award-winning textbook drama guidance teachers, presented awards to the "performance troupe". During the subsequent performances, the actors vividly portrayed classic characters from the original work such as Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, and even incorporated some modern elements. For instance, creatively integrating the sixth graders' favorite Rubik's Cube competition elements into the story content allowed students skilled in solving Rubik's Cubes to showcase their talents, eliciting amazed applause from their peers. By combining classic plots of "Journey to the West" with imagination, new personalities and trajectories were given to the characters. The audience deeply felt the students' endless creativity, imagination, and team spirit amid laughter and applause.
As the activities drew to a close, Ms. Liu Qiong took to the stage to award the "Journey to the West Experts," students who excelled in the classroom knowledge competition, recognizing those who were knowledgeable and quick-witted during the event.
As one of the four great classical novels of China, "Journey to the West" is not only a pinnacle of ancient long-form romantic fiction but also a classic literary work containing profound wisdom and rich cultural connotations. The sixth-grade native language group has always emphasized the reading and discussion of entire books and based on this foundation, conducted this colorful event, allowing students to better understand this classic. The entire event ended successfully in a joyful atmosphere. This "Journey to the West" themed event not only showcased the students' talents and creativity but also further stimulated their enthusiasm for learning Chinese. Through this event, students deepened their understanding of Chinese classical literature and learned the importance of teamwork and independent learning.
We look forward to the students continuing to draw inspiration from the classic "Journey to the West," in their future studies and lives, expanding their horizons and ways of thinking, and delving deeper into the profound depths of Chinese culture.
