October 14, 2024

On October 12, 2024, SHSID High School hosted a Professional Development Day focused on the theme 'SMART-H.' The event brought educators together to explore innovative strategies for homework management, aimed at supporting the holistic development and well-being of students.

SMART-H

Since the beginning of this semester, SHSID High School has been optimizing its homework management system and officially launched the SMART-H program. This initiative emphasizes five key indicators: Sensible assignment volume, Multidimensional assignment design, Active feedback and correction, Reinforced learning support, and Tactical teaching innovation. The updated homework management strategy aims to more effectively foster students' holistic development.

Psychological well-being and support are key components of our homework management strategies. The first lecture, held from 9:00 to 10:30 AM and titled "Enhancing Psychological Support in Homework Communication," was delivered by mental health therapist Ms. Niu. She offered teachers a novel perspective from the field of psychology, encouraging them to reconsider common homework challenges. Ms. Niu emphasized the vital role of effective communication in helping students manage homework-related stress. SHSID has long recognized the significance of student mental health in the education and has allocated substantial resources available to support it.

At 1:00 PM, the high school psychology team hosted a series of interactive activities, giving teachers a hands-on experience with SHSID’s available resources. These creative activities not only boosted morale but also blended learning with fun, allowing teachers to reflect and discover personal growth through active participation.

Designing homework in a multi-dimensional way to address the diverse learning styles and needs of students is another key strategy. The second lecture of the morning featured Ms. Davis and Mr. Haig from the English department, who shared insights on how to create homework tailored to different learning styles and paces, making assignments more engaging and effective. While their methods stemmed from teaching English Literature, their ideas offered valuable inspiration for teachers across all subjects.

Innovative use of modern technology is the third pillar of our homework management strategy. The PD event also featured an online session on maximizing the use of the BB platform. Ten design cases from frontline teachers were shared on BB, demonstrating creative ways to utilize the platform's features for achieving teaching objectives and enhancing homework management.

This PD day not only provided teachers with a platform for learning and exchange but also offered strong support for their professional growth. By focusing on manageable homework volumes, positive feedback, and innovative teaching strategies, the school is committed to building a more supportive and effective learning environment for students. Through these efforts, we aim to empower teachers to better guide students, ignite their passion for learning, and foster their independence, laying a solid foundation for future development. On this day, we gained not just knowledge but also the momentum to move forward.
