When Literature Meets the Stage: Workshop for High School English Teachers
On the afternoon of October 12, Mr. Eppler from the Music and Drama Group hosted a dynamic workshop titled “When Literature Meets the Stage” for high school English teachers. This session focused on creatively integrating Shakespeare into the classroom through theatrical techniques.
Every October, high school students delve into Shakespeare’s works as part of their Literature curriculum, and this workshop aimed to enhance the teaching of these classic texts. Mr. Eppler guided teachers through innovative methods that bridge play analysis with the physical aspects of acting and visual concepts for stage production.
During the workshop, teachers explored the relationship between character objectives and movement using excerpts from The Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth. Through a "whole brain" exercise, they identified conflicting character goals and how these tensions can be expressed through performance.
The session concluded with a reflection on how these techniques can be applied in future English classrooms, particularly during the study of Shakespearean plays. This creative approach promises to make literature more engaging and dynamic for students, enriching their understanding of both the text and its theatrical potential.
