Grade 9: Face Anxiety Properly

October 18, 2024

On October 16, the first House program lecture for Grade 9 students was held in the auditorium of Xianmiantang building. Taking the movie "Inside Out 2" as a base, this event analyzed adolescent anxiety and how to cope with this psychological state.

Firstly, Ms. Yu from the psychology department introduced the unique emotion of adolescence—anxiety, using the real-life situations faced by the protagonist Riley in movie clips. Ms. Yu explained that such anxiety and self-denial are quite normal for adolescent teenagers because the frontal lobe of the brain is undergoing development during this period. Instead of condemning their changes, they should accept and gradually alter them.

Why does anxiety arise during adolescence? Like most teenagers, Riley experienced self-denial and a desire for recognition from others. Ms. Yu continued by saying that anxiety has two both positive and negative impacts. On the one hand, anxiety can enhance survival functions, preparing us for potential disasters. On the other hand, anxiety can lead to catastrophic thinking, causing us to only see negative developments in situations and overlook our abilities and advantages.

So, how can we avoid the negative impacts of anxiety? Ms. Yu introduced some "stop skill" to help everyone to be able to live in the present moment rather than anticipating future negative possibilities that one cannot control.

In the second CAS class session, students returned to Zhongxing building and engaged in psychological relaxation games in their respective classrooms.

Some classes participated in the "Work Together to Pose" activity, where students formed teams to imitate interesting poses from pictures. Some classes played the "Minefield" game, where everyone worked together to navigate through the "minefield". Other classes participated in the "Magical Brush Ma Liang" activity, with five to seven students in each group cooperating to write or draw provided words and images. Other activities included "Burst the Balloon", "Riddles of Chinese Characters", and "Chain Drawing". These interactive games not only cultivated cooperation and team spirit among students but also reduced their stress and regulated their mental health.
