High School Math: Initiation of Grade 9 Statistics Teaching

October 21, 2024

After long-term audience research, content discussions, and teaching designs, the High School Math Department has implemented the inclusion of basic statistics content in the 9th grade math curriculum this academic year, aiming to cultivate students' data analysis skills through project-based learning.

At the beginning of the school year, 9th grade students received a pre-case study, engaging in initial self-exploration based on data provided by teachers and guided questions. Confronting challenges in an unfamiliar field, they attempted to analyze and interpret data using various tabular and graphical display. After collecting the students' posters, the teachers selected and displayed "subtly flawed" works in the lobby of Zhongxing Building, including many unnoticed errors or visually appealing but inappropriate chart uses, inviting students to review and write comments during breaks. Through the "fault finding" activity, students not only learned from mistakes but also allowed teachers to better understand the overall student situation, enabling targeted corrections in subsequent lessons. Following a week of content learning, in-class activities, and software practice, students were assigned a large-scale project to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios involving more extensive data and advanced tools.

The inclusion of statistics content not only benefits junior high school students for timely and effective data science enlightenment but also fosters students' critical thinking and team spirit. It is hoped that students will better grasp the fundamental principles of statistics, laying a solid foundation for future in-depth learning and practical problem-solving.
