Puxi campus Grade 8 | YD Education: Conflict resolution

October 21, 2024

In the course of academic life, it is inevitable that students or friends will experience minor conflicts. To help everyone better resolve conflicts, the eighth-grade teachers have incorporated conflict resolution content into the YD class last Thursday afternoons. The teachers hope that through this lesson, students will understand the different types of conflicts and their causes, and learn conflict resolution strategies through practice, enabling them to handle disagreements and conflicts more effectively in the future.

The YD class began with a brief sharing of personal experiences. Each student wrote down a conflict they had experienced on a piece of paper and submitted it anonymously to the teacher. After the teacher selected cases to share, students immediately began discussing how to resolve these issues without resorting to verbal insults or physical confrontations. The classroom atmosphere quickly became lively as students exchanged ideas, and representatives from each group went to the blackboard to write down their proposed solutions.

Next, the teacher discussed five types of conflict: interpersonal conflict, intergroup conflict, intragroup conflict, value conflict, and task conflict; as well as seven conflict resolution methods: active listening, mediation, negotiation, compromise, collaboration, assertion, and avoidance. Each group was also given a real-life scenario based on one of the five types of conflict. Students were required to recreate the scenario within a specified time and then present their solutions to the class in the form of a skit or short play. These performances were filled with creativity and innovation, ranging from gathering objective facts and facilitating mutual negotiation to reasonably distributing tasks, ensuring that every group member could leverage their strengths.

By participating in this class, students not only learned to analyze conflicts from different perspectives, but also practiced how to express their viewpoints clearly while respecting others, deepening their understanding of the potential issues surrounding conflicts to boot. Hopefully, we everyone will effectively apply these key skills in their future lives and become more proactive problem solvers.
