Grade 12 Assembly: Magic on the Ice

October 22, 2024

During the October 18 assembly, Cana from class 12(2) delivered a heartfelt speech about her figure skating journey. She began by debunking the common misconception that all figure skaters can perform Olympic-level feats like quadruple jumps or the elegant Biellmann spin. Instead, she explained that the sport is built on three essential components: footwork, spins, and jumps. Although she has only been skating for two years, Cana shared videos showcasing her progress, including her spins and jumps. Cana’s passion for figure skating started in 9th grade when a physical education class introduced her to the sport. Unfortunately, the lessons were cut short after just six sessions due to the pandemic. Determined to continue, she began training at her local ice rink that summer, inspired by the sight of children twirling and jumping effortlessly.

One highlight of her presentation was a series of clips showing her many falls—some of which looked especially painful—while attempting the notoriously difficult axel jump. Along the way, she also forged friendships, including one with a former professional athlete, and achieved significant milestones. These included winning first place with her team at the Shanghai Mini Trophy and passing various skating tests. Reflecting on her journey, Cana acknowledged the challenges of balancing skating with academics, admitting that she may have made sacrifices in her studies. However, she concluded that the rewards were well worth it—skating not only taught her perseverance but also brought her happiness, health, and lifelong memories.
