Middle School Science Department: Debut of the New Laboratory Microscopes

October 24, 2024

With the completion of the new lab building, students have been introduced to a brand-new way of exploring the microscopic world. The laboratory is equipped with digital tablet microscopes, fluorescence microscopes, inverted microscopes, and other advanced instruments, providing students with a learning environment that connects them to the forefront of technology.

Eighth-grade students were the first to experience these advanced tools. Through a series of carefully designed experiments, they learned how to operate the new microscopes and observed the unique structures of onion epidermal cells and tomato cells. This not only deepened their understanding of biological knowledge but also allowed them to experience the wonders of scientific technology firsthand. Particularly during the experiment on October 22, where they observed the plasmolysis and recovery of onion epidermal cells, students witnessed the changes in plant cells under different concentrations of solutions. This vivid and intuitive teaching method greatly sparked their interest in learning.

"The moment I walked into the lab, I was captivated by those high-tech instruments," one eighth-grader excitedly shared. "We could clearly see the internal structures of cells, which was much more vivid than the pictures in our textbooks."

The completion of the Hsi Building marks not only an upgrade in the school's infrastructure but also a leap in its educational philosophy. It provides students with a broader platform for learning while encouraging them to actively explore the unknown and cultivate innovative thinking. In the future, more experimental teaching and project-based learning will take place in this space, and students will continue to unlock access to more advanced equipment. All of this will allow students to continually explore and discover through practice, fueling their passion for and pursuit of the natural sciences, laying a solid foundation for them to become future scientific explorers. Shanghai High School International Division is leading students toward a new journey of scientific exploration with a fresh perspective.
