Echoes of Golden Chimes, Embracing Autumn's Renewal — Record of SHSID Middle and Primary School Professional Development Day.
Golden Winds Adorn the Osmanthus Once More
“The golden winds once again adorn the osmanthus trees, as one ascends the path of teaching.” On October 12th, Mr. Ni Minxue, Director of MPTC began by using the poetic lines to highlight the 'realm' of new teachers of 2022 who are poised to embark on their teaching journeys across the beautiful campus. This also marked the beginning of this year’s Professional Development Day (PD Day) at the Middle and Primary School of SHSID.
The ceremony began with the culmination of the new teachers' training program. Over the past two years, the new teachers have rapidly grown into fresh talents across different grades and subjects under the mentorship and support of their teams. This year, all of them successfully passed the evaluations, with Ms. Zhang Jieying from the Zhangjiang campus standing out as the only teacher to complete the training ahead of schedule. Amid warm applause, Principal Liu Lian presented the new teachers with their certificates and flowers in celebration. The new teachers, in turn, expressed their gratitude by offering flowers to their mentors, acknowledging the guidance that helped them thrive in their new roles.
“There is a deep affection for the lecture podium.” Ms. Zhu Yiwei from the elementary section, Ms. Zuo Tianyu from the middle school section, and Ms. Zhang Jialin from the art department shared heartfelt reflections on their growth and achievements over the past two years, expressing sincere gratitude to their mentors, colleagues, and the school. In return, the mentors warmly encouraged the young teachers to embrace a broad mindset and genuine compassion, aiming to become guiding lights for students' growth.
In his speech, Principal Liu encouraged the new teachers to deepen their understanding of four key elements in teaching: 'students,' 'subjects,' 'skills,' and 'spirit,' thereby elevating their own professional 'realm.' He further expressed his hope that the young teachers would strive and flourish – Bloom Where You Are Planted.
True Teaching Goes Beyond Words
During the research department discussions on that day, each group conducted focused sharing and exchanges. The middle school Chinese department revisited the classroom learning process from the students' perspective, exploring ways to better guide student thinking, enhance classroom interaction, and improve learning outcomes. The middle school math department shared exemplary exam questions and homework designs around the IL framework.
The physics group also focused on how to optimize assignments and question design to meet the developmental needs of students. The science department concentrated on the topic of "classroom management," exploring effective strategies to create a more supportive learning environment.
The elementary Chinese department brought together teachers from four campuses to brainstorm practical methods and techniques from the perspectives of subject characteristics and student cognitive development. The elementary math teachers collaborated on lesson planning around the new textbooks, sharing research findings and teaching strategies for related topics.
“True Teaching Goes Beyond Words.” At the middle and primary school, teachers' professional growth begins from their very first day on the job. In addition to the hands-on mentorship from experienced teachers, there are customized training programs tailored for new recruits. Before the start of the school year, they undergo intensive training, followed by targeted requirements during the semester, such as candid feedback and reflective sessions. Each step is intricately linked, providing new teachers with a series of specialized training sessions that help them quickly grow and mature.
The meticulously planned professional development activities offer teachers ongoing learning opportunities and foster a team imbued with vitality and innovative spirit. As the saying goes, “light without glare, yet deep as still waters.” In the seemingly daily routines of teaching, all of our educators continuously accumulate knowledge, subtly expand their horizons, and incessantly improve themselves. In every corner of the classroom, they sow seeds of wisdom, guiding students towards broader horizons.
“The echoes of golden chimes resound as the campus embraces autumn’s renewal.” This new academic year, the middle and primary school has moved into the newly completed campus complex. With the collective effort of all staff and students, we are set to continue reaping fruitful achievements in this new phase of our journey!
