Middle and Primary School English Department – Poetry Day – Words and Numbers
On Wednesday, October 23rd, Grade 4-8 students gathered in the reading room of HSI building for a special celebration of English poetry. This year's theme was Words and Numbers. The theme highlighted the power of interdisciplinary learning, while fostering independent thinking. Through various poetry exercises the connection of mathematics was enhanced the beauty of the English language.
Students embraced the challenge of blending poetry with numerical concepts, making cross-curricular connections, and bringing abstract concepts to reality. In one activity, students explored the idea of identity through ratios, crafting poems that reflected the proportions and elements that make them who they are. They delved into Shakespeare's sonnets, applying numerology and mathematical close reading to "crack the Shakespeare code." Another task led them through the Fibonacci sequence, creating poetry with syllabic patterns based on this famous mathematical sequence. Students even explored the world of Ancient Greek poetry by writing Paean poems, paying tribute to numbers with words of gratitude and reverence.
In addition to creating poetry, students had the opportunity to showcase their work at the front of the room to share with their peers and teachers. This allowed students to have the chance to view and appreciate diverse expressions of creativity emerging from the blending of mathematics and English. Alongside their displayed work, students submitted individual workbooks which showed their creative thinking even more in depth. Once the workbooks were submitted students were entered for a chance to win a prize. This approach not only recognized their individual efforts but also created a sense of fair competition, allowing all students an opportunity to be rewarded for their individuality and critical thinking.
Throughout the day, students not only experienced the pleasure of crafting and analyzing poetry but also discovered the deep, meaningful connections between the language of numbers and the language of words. This event showcased the potential of interdisciplinary learning, proving that when subjects overlap, they reinforce one another and encourage students to see learning as a holistic, real-world experience.
