SHSID Girls Participated in "For Girls in Science" Program at CIIE
On November 7, 11 girls from Shanghai High School International Division were invited to the China International Import Expo (CIIE) to attend a lecture held by L'Oréal China as part of their "For Girls in Science" program. This event was the first of its kind in the history of the CIIE, to target middle school students with a science education initiative, designed to ignite girls' interest and enthusiasm for science.
The event featured a special guest, Professor Pan Meng, the head of the Dermatology Department at Ruijin Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, who delivered an engaging "skin science lesson" to the group of scientifically inclined high school girls. Under Professor Pan's guidance, the students delved into the mysteries of the skin, the largest organ of the human body, and its close relationship with daily life and the pursuit of a fulfilling life.
During the lecture, Professor Pan presented the basic structure and functions of the skin, as well as common skin issues like acne and their management, in an accessible and informative way. She encouraged the students to take an active interest in their skin health and to use scientific methods for its care. Additionally, Professor Pan provided an in-depth look at the "For Girls in Science" program, discussing its commitment to nurturing a passion for science among women.
The event concluded with a visit from L'Oréal's board members and representatives from the L'Oréal Research and Innovation Center, who took commemorative photos with the students. The students engaged actively, discussing and exploring scientific topics with Professor Pan and L'Oréal's specialists, experiencing the allure and boundless potential of science. This unique opportunity not only allowed the students to interact closely with scientists and experts but also kindled their passion and aspirations for scientific inquiry.
Following the lecture, several girls from SHSID were interviewed, demonstrating impressive scientific acumen and a positive, proactive attitude. They unanimously expressed that the lecture had deepened their understanding and appreciation of science, and sparked their dreams and ambitions for future careers in the scientific field.
Participation in this event not only reflects the high emphasis that SHSID places on the cultivation of students' scientific literacy, but also demonstrates the school's determination to encourage students to step out of the campus and engage with cutting-edge technology. Through such activities, SHSID has not only provided a platform for students to interact with top scientists and industry experts, but also subtly conveyed the school's educational philosophy of being committed to cultivating high-quality talents with an international perspective, scientific literacy, and a sense of social responsibility.
