Middle and Primary School Science and Technology Department: The Fourth Shanghai Youth "Carbon" Environmental Innovation Project Competition
On November 10, 2024, the Fourth Shanghai Youth "Carbon" Environmental Innovation Project Competition successfully concluded at the Shanghai Meteorological Museum. With the theme "Frontline of Climate Action," this event was organized by the Shanghai Science Association for Young Talents, the Shanghai Meteorological Society, and the Publicity Science and Education Center of the Shanghai Meteorological Service. The competition aimed to engage young people in climate change issues, promote green transition, and cultivate students' environmental awareness and scientific innovation skills. After intense competition, students from SHSID Middle and Primary School stood out, securing one first prize, two second prizes, two Ocean Special Awards, and two third prizes, showcasing their outstanding research and innovation capabilities.
Since its launch in August 2024, students from schools across Shanghai have actively participated, submitting nearly a thousand project proposals. Following an initial selection, 77 project teams advanced to the final evaluation and exhibition. Six teams from SHSID qualified for the final round and achieved impressive results. Among them, Ivan's project, "Study on the Distribution of Microplastics and Plastic Residues in Soil after Applying Biodegradable Agricultural Films," won first prize, demonstrating his expertise in environmental technology. Edward and Hayley's project, "Impact of Water Stagnation in Tap Water Pipes on Water Quality and Methods of Water Quality Restoration," along with Steven's study on "Feasibility of Using Seawater Rice to Suppress Invasive Spartina Alterniflora," both won second prizes, as well as the "Hand in Hand with the Sea" Special Award.
During the project exhibition on November 10, students from SHSID participated in the final defense, where the project team members impressed experts with their thorough preparation and excellent presentation, earning high praise. Steven, one of the participants, shared his experience: “This competition has been extremely meaningful to me. After countless long days of conducting experiments in the field, I truly understood the hard work involved in scientific research, and I felt the reward of this effort during the competition. I also realized the level of rigor and careful thinking required for scientific defense. This kind of learning and exchange has deepened my knowledge and experience in science and technology presentations, increasing my interest in scientific research.”
The exceptional performance of the SHSID Middle and Primary School not only demonstrated the students’ research and innovation capabilities but also highlighted the school's dedication to environmental science education. Looking ahead, the school will continue to embrace a green education philosophy, actively fostering students’ environmental awareness and scientific innovation abilities, contributing to the country’s sustainable development.
