Live Broadcast from An Antarctic Research Station

November 22, 2024

To celebrate China's 40th Anniversary of the Antarctic Scientific Expedition, on November 18th. The students welcomed Mr. Wang, the station head from the Antarctic research station "Great Wall Station", to bring live access to the Antarctic through on-site satellite communication and unveil the mystery of the Antarctic research work.

In the live broadcast, Mr. Wang introduced the work and life of the Antarctic research station in detail. He mentioned that in the extreme environment of Antarctica, scientists carry out a variety of scientific observation and research tasks such as meteorological monitoring, earthquake early warning, biodiversity protection, and geological exploration.  For energy support, due to the severe natural environment, diesel has become the main energy source in the station, while wind and solar energy are not widely used due to technical and weather conditions. The team is currently exploring the possibility of other energy sources to meet the challenges posed by extreme conditions in the Antarctic geometeorological environment.

In the online interaction session, the students asked various questions and expressed their strong interest in Antarctic scientific research. Mr. Wang patiently answered everyone's questions about why they came to the Antarctic, what there is to do in the Antarctic, what types of tasks they do in the station, and shared their daily life and work in the station. He emphasized that Antarctic scientific exploration is not only a challenging task but also a sacred mission, one that is vital to the future of the Earth and the well-being of humanity.

In addition, Mr. Wang also introduced the observation and research work on meteorology, earthquakes, birds, animals, geology, and other aspects of the Antarctic scientific exploration, and how part of the data is shared globally through the observation website. As one of the least human activity areas on Earth, the Antarctic environmental monitoring data has high scientific value and has been widely recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). At the end of the live broadcast, Mr. Wang gave a beautiful vision of harmonious coexistence between man and nature, calling on all mankind to jointly develop the Antarctic and contribute their strength to protect the Earth.

This live online lecture not only allowed the students to gain a deeper understanding of the Antarctic scientific exploration but also inspired their enthusiasm and courage to explore the unknown world. We believe that in the near future, more students will join the course of ecological protection and sustainable development and create a brighter future for mankind.
