High School Math: Outstanding Competition Results, Diverse Talents on Stage

November 25, 2024

Recently, six high school students from both the local division and the international division traveled to the United States to participate in the 2024 Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) and achieved excellent results.

Since 1998, the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) has been held twice a year, in November and February, at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As one of the most influential math competitions in the United States for high school students, it attracts many math enthusiasts from around the world each year. The competition is conducted in a team format, with teams of 4-6 students competing for individual and team awards. The November HMMT event consists of four rounds, including individual rounds, theme rounds, and team rounds, requiring teamwork to solve problems. The team's total score is the sum of the players' scores in the four rounds.

After thorough pre-competition training, the six team members had a clear division of tasks and showcased their strengths. In the challenging relay round, the students competed with hundreds of participants in the lecture hall, with the team's score ranking continuously updated on the big screen, putting great mental pressure on them. Our school's six team members ensured accuracy while allocating time reasonably, ultimately leading the real-time scoreboards.

One SHS student, Gong, ranked first among over 600 participants, and three students reached the top 20 individually. The team achieved first place in the individual rounds, theme rounds, and relay rounds respectively, with a total score of 1545 points, surpassing the second-place team by 80 points, and won the overall championship among over 100 teams.

In addition, SHSID high school students actively participated in a variety of other math competitions. During the Math League high school group competitions in October and November, 2 students scored full marks in the first round and 1 student scored full mark in the second round. 261 students actively participated in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) in November. In the modeling competition in November, 52 students formed 13 teams to participate in HiMCM, while 16 students formed 4 teams to participate in IMMC Chinese Autumn Competition. After two weeks of preparatory activities, students will travel to Beijing at the end of November to participate in the BMT competition. Best wishes for their success!

Apart from mathematical competitions and challenges, there are passionate and creative stage performances for students to express their love for math. On December 5, the original mathematical drama "The Investigation of Nine Chapters" will be performed. This is the third consecutive year that SHSID has presented student-written, directed, and performed works, combining math history with theatrical art. Let's look forward to this exciting performance together!
