High School Biology: SHSID Students Won First Place in SEA BEYOND Competition

November 26, 2024

On November 20, a team of seven high school students from SHSID won the First Place at the SEA BEYOND competition, hosted by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

Representing SHSID, the team received the top honor in this year's SEA BEYOND, which saw participation from 34,385 students across 184 schools globally. The theme of this year's competition centered on the connection between the ocean and climate, and it spanned over five months. Each participating team initiated student-led educational projects aimed at positively impacting ocean literacy and conservation.

The SHSID team created short videos to promote educational knowledge on ocean conservation and environmental protection, with a focus on ocean plastic pollution and its relationship with climate change. Over several weeks, the team, with the support of their mentor, Ms. Cui, held numerous discussions and planning sessions. In addition to utilizing the learning materials provided by SEA BEYOND, the team members drew great inspiration from their personal experiences and observations. Their short videos attracted thousands of views and were integrated into their final competition report. The project was a collaborative team effort, with each member's contribution amplifying its impact.

The online awards ceremony was attended by student participants from around the world. The event featured speakers such as a National Geographic photographer, a deep-sea coral researcher, and an environmentally conscious artist. These individuals shared valuable insights into their real-world experiences as full-time environmental activists, and their stories resonated greatly with all the students.

The SEA BEYOND organizers acknowledged SHSID's long-term devotion to the program and encouraged the school to continue its strong participation. The First Place Award was presented to SHSID by the event hosts. Ms. Cui and Aaron from grade 11 delivered speeches highlighting the team's hard work and creativity. The school also received a spool of Re-Nylon yarn, a material crafted from recycled plastic waste, as a token of recognition. As this year's SEA BEYOND concluded with the ceremony, it symbolized a significant achievement of the participants and set the stage for global students to continue their efforts in promoting ocean conservation and sustainability.
