Puxi Campus G8: Field Trip -Shanghai Astronomy Museum
On the morning of November 28th, the grade 8 students embarked on an exciting journey to the Shanghai Astronomy Museum amidst energetic sounds of laughter and exchanged words of excitement. The twelve school buses were filled to capacity with the students’ curiosity towards the exhibitions that visualized astronomical concepts, the jolly atmosphere making the way there an “interstellar classroom”.
In the museum, the journey unveiling the mysteries of the universe unraveled, beginning with the exhibition “Home”. “Home”, with Earth as the starting point, was an astonishingly realistic model that signified the relationship between the Earth and the other planets in the solar system. Students crowded around the model of the universe, eagerly trying the experimentations upon the simulated sensation of picking up objects in space stations. Exploring freely, students scattered throughout the exhibition hall, fascinated by the wonders of the vast universe.
As the exploration intensified into deeper depths, students engaged themselves within more complex topics, as the exhibitions comprised of knowledge ranging from the most basic part about the planets to Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, and more. In confronting these complex theories, some students were brimful of curiosity, whilst others seemed “lost in space”. After the feast of astronomical knowledge, everyone gathered at the brightly lit circular staircase, enjoying their lunch picnics whilst passionately conversing about their noteworthy discoveries.
The day’s journey neared its closure as the sun gradually began to set. On the way back to campus, the students’ lively spirits were not diminished as they enthusiastically planned their documentation of this journey at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum through posters and vlogs. We have great anticipation for their final products, as many of the students are masters of video editing, and others are masters of photography.
Through this experience, eighth grade students gained more insights into their “home”- the Earth and the galaxy it belongs to. This field trip aimed to promote the students to seek for a deeper understanding of our position in the universe through a joyful journey, and strived to cultivate their curiosity and exploratory interests. The day’s exploration within the realm of astronomy concluded as an unforgettable experience in the students’ growth journey.
