Puxi Campus Grade 8: YD Education---Stress Management
Eighth grade is a key period of a student’s mental and physical development. Under the influence of puberty, supporting students' mental health becomes increasingly important. During the Yd period of 11/21, the eighth-grade students engaged in an exploration of stress and stress management with the instructions of their teachers.
First, the students listed some of the triggers to their personal stress on the whiteboard. Academic phrases such as “homework” and “exams” were constantly brought up. Many students claimed that when they experienced stress from these triggers, they also experienced negative emotions like anxiety and fear. How do students deal with stress? In the following group discussion, students shared some of their personal stress relief methods, which included taking a nap, eating comfort food, and engaging in activities they enjoy to divert their attention from stress. Following this, the students watched three videos together. These videos covered the origin of stress, the effects of both short-term and long-term stress, and effective strategies for managing stress. After the first lesson, everyone had gained a better understanding of how to recognize and cope with stress.
As the second class began, the teachers used the popular movie Inside Out 2 to introduce and explain the different emotions that occur during puberty. While analyzing the pros and cons of the emotions, they also analyzed the ways to face these emotions. The students were able to empathize with the movie and reflect on their own methods of treating emotions. Through the different figures that represent different emotions in the movie, the students understood the specialness and complexity of the emotions. Many said that they will become more careful with their emotion management methods and prevent “bottling” or over expressing emotions. The lesson soon ended in the students’ excited discussion, but the ability to manage stress and emotions that was gained from this class will become a lifelong tool for the students in the future.
