ICC Science Lecture – A Discovery Opening the Road to Scientific Research
On May 23rd, SHSID High School invited several experts from ICW to give a lecture on scientific research guidance at noon in the ZTB lecture hall. The lecture focused on several science exploration processes, including the origin of the questions, where the ideas come from, the skills of the inventor, how to solve the problems, and the story behind the inventors, etc.
First, Mr. Ansell took a chair as an example, asking everyone to design a chair to represent the character card they received. In the lecture room, plenty of students finished the small hand-made chairs and shared their designs with others. Based on that design, the students were invited to discuss what skills are needed to invent and think about how they can cultivate their own innovation ability. At the same time, Mr. Ansell stressed that invention requires several skills of the inventor, including creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, persistence, collaboration, communication, project management, and adaptability, etc. In addition, he let everyone see the importance of focusing on deep thinking and looking at problems from multiple perspectives.
Followed by the ideas of the chair design and the skills of the inventor, Mr. Ansell shared the success stories behind ICW competition, and motivated the students to think about how to begin topic ideas with small things around you and find interesting topics in daily life. Among them, one of the winning cases is where the inventor got the inspiration from their daily running, thinking that energy can be obtained from their shoes, through the circuit design to convert kinetic energy into electricity. This design of recycling energy not only applies to what high school students learn, but also fits in with the global advocacy of green environmental protection. After the lecture, several students put forward their own questions on science topics and research methods to the experts at present. The experts answered them one by one and encouraged them to think actively and persistently on the road of science exploration.
The science lectures are one of the numerous platforms set up by SHSID, focusing on the personal and lifelong development of every student. The fruitful achievements in recent years cannot be separated from the multi-faceted science and innovation education as well as the talent-training strategies provided by SHSID. We hope that this type of lectures can encourage students to choose science projects that cater to a real interest direction of theirs and ultimately be able to realize their dreams in the foreseeable future!
