Puxi Campus G4-5 | 2024 Science Week
In the crisp days of early December, the Puxi Campus of Shanghai High School International Division transformed into a dynamic hub of curiosity and innovation for the much-anticipated Science Week. Centered around the theme of "Scientific Experiments," the event offered students the opportunity to embrace their roles as budding scientists, sparking their creativity and deepening their passion for discovery.
Exploring the Science Labs: A Journey of Wonder
On Monday and Tuesday, Grade 5 students embarked on an exciting exploration of the school’s newly renovated science building. Each laboratory revealed a new realm of discovery, captivating the students with its cutting-edge equipment and unique opportunities. Guided by their teachers, students toured various labs, including the Biology Lab, the Molecular and Cell Biology Lab, the Biomedical Physiology Lab, and others. These spaces unveiled the hidden wonders of life, providing a deeper appreciation for the microscopic world.
The labs on the third floor, including the Plant Physiology Lab, Entomology Lab, Environment and Sustainable Development Lab, and Food Science Lab became focal points of curiosity. Students conducted hands-on plant physiology experiments, observed insect behavior, and explored sophisticated tools such as insect olfactory devices and zoom microscopes. Meanwhile, the fourth floor’s “Fun Exploration Room” became a highlight. Students encountered rare animals and even fed them under teacher supervision, gaining a tangible understanding of biodiversity and how ecosystems function in harmony.
Hands-On Learning: Mastering the Scientific Process
Wednesday was dedicated to experimentation. Grade 5 students tackled renewable energy concepts by building fruit batteries and solar-powered cars. Applying recent lessons on energy conservation, they learned through trial and error, refining their techniques to overcome challenges like loose connections or improperly aligned components. With perseverance, they mastered the experiments, cultivating critical thinking and problem-solving skills along the way.
Grade 4 students, meanwhile, explored the art of observation during a workshop led by Ms. Chen Li titled Nature Observation Notes. Using tree leaves as their focus, students were guided in documenting their observations with precision and creativity. They then transformed these observations into vibrant collages, blending science and art. Each piece showcased their individual perspectives on nature, marking the beginning of their journeys as keen observers and scientific thinkers.
The Grand Finale: A Science Fair to Remember
Thursday marked the pinnacle of Science Week—the eagerly awaited Science Fair. The Hsi Building cafeteria was transformed into a bustling hub of discovery, divided into four themed zones: Interactive Experience, Frontiers of Science and Technology Innovation, Ecological Encyclopedia, and Independent Projects. With their “Science Passports” in hand, students enthusiastically explored each zone, immersing themselves in the wonders of science.
In the Interactive Experience Zone, students tried their hands at various experiments and crafts, such as generating electricity with bicycles to creating cotton candy, designing leaf bookmarks, and building miniature ecosystems. In the Frontiers of Science and Technology Innovation Zone, parent volunteers introduced students to topics like reusable rockets, electric vehicles, XR technology, and AI-powered innovations like YOLO AI systems. These exhibits showcased the vast potential of technological advancement, inspiring students with humanity’s drive to push boundaries.
The Ecological Encyclopedia Zone offered a window into the diversity of life, featuring plant seeds, insect specimens, and human anatomical models. Students marveled at the intricate details of these exhibits, gaining a newfound appreciation for the natural world. Meanwhile, the Independent Projects Zone highlighted student-led initiatives. Here, students displayed their experiments and findings, combining creativity with scientific rigor, and presenting their work to peers and teachers with pride.
Adding to the excitement, senior students from the middle school Science Academy joined the event, offering expert guidance and mentorship. Their presence not only energized the fair but also set a powerful example for younger students, showing what can be achieved through curiosity and dedication.
At the same time, the Hsi Building Lecture Hall hosted a captivating dinosaur-themed talk by Dr. Hu Xidan from the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. Drawing from rare fossil imagery and modern reconstructions, Dr. Hu led students on a journey through prehistory, unraveling the mysteries of dinosaur life. The talk blended science and storytelling, leaving students both informed and inspired.
Science Week was more than just a celebration of experiments—it was a platform for students to explore, create, and grow. Through hands-on activities, thought-provoking workshops, and inspiring discussions, students were encouraged to think critically, dream boldly, and approach challenges with confidence. As this incredible week came to a close, it was clear that the seeds of curiosity and innovation had been sown. These young minds will continue to grow, guided by their love for science and their determination to explore the unknown. Looking ahead, we eagerly await the next Science Week, where even greater discoveries and breakthroughs will surely take center stage.
