Original Math Drama "Behind The Nine Chapters" Debuted at SHSID

December 6, 2024

At 16:30 on December 5th, 2024, the original math drama "Behind The Nine Chapters" by SHSID's high school math drama club was brilliantly staged at the Zhongxing Building Theater. This marks the third consecutive year that SHSID high school students have showcased their talent in writing, directing, and acting in a math drama, simultaneously broadcasting the performance live online to share their mathematical enthusiasm with a wider audience.

"Behind The Nine Chapters" explored the world of Mathematicians from students' perspective. Together with the protagonist of the story, the audience rediscovered the warmth and depth of mathematics. By immersing the audience in a humanistic machine system, this drama focused on depicting the significant life milestones of the ancient Chinese mathematician Liu Hui, as well as his ambition in annotating "The Nine Chapters". He not only contributed in mathematics, but also paved a bright path to math for those who would follow. Combining rigorous mathematics with boundless imagination, the audience were provided with a dual immersion in rationality and sensibility.

On the stage, students vividly portrayed how Liu Hui unveiled the mysteries of mathematics. Beyond the stage, profound mathematical concepts such as the methods of dissection and limits bridge the gap between academic teachings and practical realities, fostering a deeper understanding and sincere admiration for the ancient sage's exceptional contributions among students.

Following the successful performance, Mr. Ma Feng, the high school principal of Shanghai High School International Division, fully affirmed the growth of the students. This is the third math drama event held by the school, and Principal Ma has witnessed the students' comprehensive improvement from technical skills to professionalism, and to academic rigor and performance quality. He underscored the integration of historical elements, multimedia, music, and dance within the drama, showcasing the students' well-rounded development. With a mere two months for preparation, the students were able to take the initiative and use their spare time from studies and club activities to still present a high-quality work. Principal Ma highly praised the club's performance with the phrase "small team, limited time, great results," expressed his gratitude for the students' sincere efforts, and looked forward to the outcomes of next year's math drama. He firmly believes that when given a stage, students will consistently bring surprise with their talents and creativity.

Professor Liu Pan from the School of Mathematical Sciences of East China Normal University and Deputy Secretary General of the Mathematical Education Branch of the Chinese Mathematical Society, commended the SHSID Math Drama Club for consistently maintaining a high level of professionalism in his closing speech. The drama's impressive technological integration offered intuitive depictions of sophisticated concepts like the Method of Exhaustion for Calculating Pi and Yang Hui's Volume Calculation Method, while the innovative fusion of rap and dance to introduce "The Nine Chapters" was particularly striking. Professor Liu highlighted the inseparability of mathematics from its inheritance. As one of the most outstanding mathematicians in the ancient China, Liu Hui's mathematical ideas have profoundly influenced posterity, yet there are few records about his personal story. As 2025 approaches the 1800th anniversary of Liu Hui's birth, this drama stands as a respectful tribute, demonstrating the students' reverence for mathematical history and their enthusiasm for mathematical culture. Students are encouraged to continue leveraging their imagination to craft new stories and eagerly anticipates future collaborative opportunities.
