Primary and Middle School English Department: SUZMUN activity
On the morning of May 17, 2024, the 7th and 8th graders of SHSID’s MUN club embarked on their journey to travel to Suzhou and attend SUZMUN. The students, excited and eager, represented delegates of the countries within the UN and met with almost four hundred other delegates, ranging from middle schoolers to high schoolers, hailing from cities all over China. The conference lasted from May 17-19.
During the three-day conference, students split into different committees such as the Economic and Social Counsel (ECOSOC) and the United Nations Committee on Science and Technology for Development (UNCoST). The students delivered speeches, wrote policies, and collaborated with others to find the best solutions for tackling pressing problems facing our world both today and in the future.
Of the 28 members that participated in SUZMUN, 9 delegates were main submitters for resolutions within their committees- Alexandra 8-1, Melonie 8-13, Isabel 7-5, Isabel 7-11, Alfie 8-2, Emma 7-12, Miki 7-12, Leo 7-10, and Eleanor 8-11. The students, who worked tirelessly during the days prior in preparation to propose sustainable and feasible solutions, proudly presented them in front of their committees. Everyone spokes with passion, clear logic, and with great diplomacy for their own countries.
As the three days passed by, the MUN team not only learned valuable lessons and made memorable friendships, but they also received awards that further proved their hard work and dedication. This valuable experience allowed members to practice a myriad of essential skills in research, writing, public speaking, and debating. Furthermore, the delegates developed their independence, time efficiency, and social skills through engaging with other delegates and establishing friendships.
Of our students, 28 excelled among nearly 400 students, 3 delegates received honorable mentions for their performance in their committees- Alexandra 8-2, Melonie 8-13, Sophie 8-6, and 5 delegates were awarded the title of Outstanding Delegate for their performance in their committees- Jennifer Tong 8-4, Isabel 7-5, Emma 7-12, Leo 7-10, and Taeyun 8-3. All the delegates who attended should be commended for their hard work and be proud of their achievements.
The MUN students are enthusiastic about future opportunities for participating in MUN conferences to make the world a better place and improve their skills. The students have all shown their abilities to be independent learners and responsible global citizens.
