Primary and Middle School English Department: Puxi Campus G4-5 Author's Week

May 22, 2024

Grade 4 and 5 Author’s Week was full of excitement as students delved into the worlds of two notable authors: Rick Riordan, famed for the Percy Jackson series inspired by Greek mythology, and Grace Lin, a Chinese American author known for drawing inspiration from Chinese folklore and culture. Throughout the week, the students engaged in a variety of enrichment activities celebrating these literary figures.

In Grade 4, the week commenced in the reading room, where students immersed themselves in activities centered around Rick Riordan's books. They showcased their acting prowess in an actor's corner and savored Greek yogurt as a cultural treat. Concurrently, a hands-on STEAM activity in the atrium saw students constructing Icarus wings as well as self-evaluating their wing flights demonstrating cross-curricular learning. Idiom dress-up day added to the excitement, with students on the lookout for idioms throughout the day and participating in a vase decorating activity. The week culminated in Greek character dress-up day, featuring an energetic scavenger hunt.

Similarly, in Grade 5, students engaged in brainteasers and riddles, echoing the themes in Grace Lin's works, empathizing with characters such as Minli. They also received a tutorial on drawing Chinese-inspired dragons and decorated kites inspired by Lin's book "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon." Idiom dress-up day, accompanied with a fun game of Bingo, rounded off the week with students creatively expressing and interpreting figurative language.

Grade 4 and 5 Author’s Week greatly enhanced the students' strong interest in English reading, strengthened the foundation of English literature learning, and allowed the students to deeply feel the literary charm presented by the works.
