Grades 9-10:Job Shadow Day Opened Up New Worlds

December 16, 2024

On the afternoon of December 11, all Grade 9 and 10 students, led by their House Program mentors, ventured out of the school campus to conduct site visits to various companies, universities, museums, and other locations. To cater to the diverse interests and career aspirations of the students, the visits were divided into three main directions: Research Exploration, Cultural Journey, and Career Experience. Seventeen destinations, including the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, NYU Shanghai, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Agriculture and Biology, Shanghai University Engineering Training Center, Meituan, NIO, and others, attracted students to explore.

01 Research Exploration

During their visits to universities and research institutes, the students were deeply immersed in the rich academic atmosphere. In the laboratories of universities and research institutes, the students also comprehensively and deeply appreciated the frontier research achievements in fields such as biology and engineering. They not only had close encounters with cutting-edge scientific research results but also grasped the spirit of scientific exploration.

Chancellor Tong Shijun of NYU Shanghai welcomed the teachers and students, encouraging the students to pursue their dreams from high school, focus on their interests, and actively explore. The teachers at NYU Shanghai led the group to visit the Shanghai Laboratory of Urban Design and Urban Science (LOUD). During Professor Guan's urban design class, the students gained an in-depth understanding of the application and impact of AI and energy on urban planning, actively interacted with the professors and teachers during the Q&A sessions.

02 Cultural Journey

In the museums, which are rich in cultural heritage, the students embarked on a profound journey of exploration into culture and art, savoring the boundless charm of language and appreciating the profound historical accumulation of the exhibits. At the Shanghai film museum, the students were deeply impressed by the technology, creativity, and innovation involved in the process of film production. At the World Language Museum, they felt the unique cultures embodied in different languages around the world and the great spirit that has been passed down from generation to generation. Inside the dazzling Shanghai Grand Theatre, they unveiled the mysteries of drama production and gained an in-depth understanding of the performance process.

03 Career Experience

In the offices and production workshops of various enterprises, guided by the staff, students engaged in hands-on activities to personally experience the unique charm and cultural atmosphere of each company. Experts from fund and investment companies delivered captivating lectures, greatly inspiring students' strong interest and boundless aspirations in the financial sector. Stepping into the advanced laboratories of medical companies, students experienced procedures such as intravenous infusion and using ultrasound devices to detect stones. At the intelligent systems company, students learned that lithium batteries are the core of new energy and an important element in scientific development.

Students usually learn in their daily classrooms, systematically absorbing a wealth of theoretical knowledge. Growth does not only occur within the confines of the campus; this "immersive" visit to the workplace environment helps students understand the demands of different job roles for knowledge and abilities. It is like a seed filled with hope, deeply planted in the hearts of every student. Everyone has also come to a deeper realization of the diversity and infinite possibilities of knowledge. They will continue to bravely explore the unknown and pursue their own dreams on the path of growth. Finally, we extend our sincere thanks and heartfelt blessings to all the enterprises, universities, and museum staff who supported and participated in this event.

Students' Reflections

As a student who loves music and is learning various art forms, the opportunity to enter the Shanghai Grand Theatre today and visit its internal construction and management was like a dream coming true. After listening to the teacher's sharing, I learned about the cultural and artistic elements behind these designs and was even more amazed at the ingenuity and exquisiteness of its structure. Entering the auditorium and looking down at the entire stage and theatre from the last row, I could almost see the overlapping silhouettes of thousands of different performances, converging into a passion named art. I hope to pursue a career in art management in the future. Therefore, in today's lecture, the teacher's detailed introduction to the theatre's operation and management was enlightening. I also understood that the presentation of excellent art requires the efforts of countless people.

Today's experience at Peak Racing was truly unforgettable! I recently watched "Pegasus 2", and a line from the movie has been imprinted in my mind: "The best way to overcome fear is to face it." Therefore, today's experience deeply moved me and made me more courageous when facing the challenge of karting. As a first-timer, I not only learned about its construction and safety essentials but also raced on the track, experiencing the collision between speed and passion. Through this Job Shadow Day, I profoundly felt the charm and challenges of being a race-car driver.

We learned that lithium is an important element for scientific development. After the teacher's introduction, I realized that the science that once seemed out of reach is, in fact, everywhere in life. When we arrived at the workshop, we saw endless experimental equipment and test instruments neatly arranged and displayed in an orderly fashion. At that moment, the accuracy, scientificity, and rigor of science became extremely clear.

The museum introduces the development of the contemporary film industry, including the latest special effects production technology and the application of VR, showcasing the film industry's vitality in keeping pace with the times. The Shanghai Film Museum is not only a place to recount history but also a vibrant spiritual space. I hope the film industry continues to thrive, and I sincerely appreciate this film journey.

We visited the LOUD in NYU Shanghai, an institution renowned for its cutting-edge research. Additionally, we toured the campus of NYU Shanghai, which boasts a vibrant learning atmosphere and impressive architectural design. The campus not only provides an excellent environment for the laboratory but also fosters a conducive space for students. Overall, the visit was highly beneficial, offering a genuine understanding of numerous urban design cases.
