High School Students Won Multiple Awards in the 24 Solar Terms Creative Painting Competition
Numerous students from SHSID actively participated in the 2024 Shanghai International Schools' Student Creative Illustration Contest under the guidance of teachers from the art department and the Chinese department and achieved remarkable results at the end of the year. Ultimately, our high school students brought home 11 first-prize awards, 8 second-prize awards, and 3 third-prize awards, marking a significant accomplishment. Notably, Grade 11 student Xie and Ms. Xu from the Chinese Language Department were invited to participate in the results showcase event on Shanghai Education Television.
Xie from G11 emotionally shared her creative journey. To fulfill the task of creating an artwork focused on traditional culture, she diligently watched numerous video materials, deeply appreciating the profoundness and unique charm of Chinese culture. Inspired by this, she meticulously conceived the theme of "The Cycle of Seasons," crafting a series of four watercolor paintings that vividly depict the vitality of spring, the fervor of summer, the abundance of autumn, and the tranquility of winter. Particularly ingenious is how she meticulously cut each painting into six pieces, cleverly corresponding to the 24 Solar Terms in Chinese culture, demonstrating her profound understanding and creative interpretation of traditional culture.
Ms. Xu proudly introduced the diverse activities organized by SHSID Chinese Department. Among them, the "Stories of China" performance event was particularly eye-catching, where students adapted and performed classic stories, not only honing their language expression skills but also deepening their understanding and love for Chinese culture. Furthermore, the annual Multicultural Day (MIX Day) held by the high school section has become a stunning attraction, with activities such as the witty exchanges of the "Flying Flower Orders" game, the elegant craftsmanship of folding fans, the delicate weaving of Chinese knots, and the performances by renowned Peking Opera artists taking place in rotation, infusing the campus with a rich cultural ambiance.
This 24 Solar Terms Creative Illustration Activity not only provided a stage for international students to showcase their profound understanding of Chinese culture but also inspired them to continuously improve their Chinese language skills in the melting pot of multiculturalism, nurturing them into talented individuals with an international perspective and a good understanding of Chinese culture.
