G9-10 | House Program Career Planning and Reading Sharing

May 17, 2024

On the afternoon of May 15, students in grades 9-10 gathered in various classrooms within the Zhentao Building to engage in career planning and reading sharing activities with their House Program mentors.

These mentors, hailing from diverse subject backgrounds, meticulously crafted career guidance sessions. They offered insights to help students in grades 9-10 develop self-awareness, explore their interests, delve into professional learning, and investigate potential career paths, drawing from their own academic and professional experiences.

During the activities, students and mentors either read the same book together or shared their favorite books related to their fields of interest. Prior to these sessions, mentors collaborated to share their course schedules, enhance their theoretical understanding of career guidance, and map out the planning routes for various career fields.

The mentors commenced by discussing their recommendations for future career planning for students in grades 9 and 10. They introduced various insightful assessment tools and methods for career exploration. Additionally, they provided detailed insights into the future development prospects of different fields, including the impact of artificial intelligence on areas such as music, bioengineering, data analysis, finance, history, and more. Most of the mentors shared their own career planning journey as well as the professional choices and career paths of some alumni. With the help of their mentors, students think deeply and further plan their future directions and the efforts required to achieve their goals.

In the reading sharing session, mentors and students shared books related to the fields of their House. Some Houses also read a book together to exchange reading experiences, effectively encouraging students to contact the wider unknown emerging world in this field through reading.

This event provided students with an abundance of knowledge and profound insights. Through deep exploration into the realm of economics, they came to understand that entrepreneurship stands out as a model that navigates through both challenges and opportunities. They recognized its notable attributes, requiring a comprehensive understanding of diverse professional disciplines such as management, along with detailed knowledge pertinent to their entrepreneurial pursuits. In the field of computer science, under the careful guidance of mentors, students gained a clearer understanding of different career paths, such as software development and data analysis. They diligently studied how to execute general projects and the necessary skills for participating in these professional roles. In addition, some students also participated in online personality tests, gaining a deep understanding of their own personality types through scientific data analysis, providing a powerful reference for future career choices.

This career planning activity provided students with a rare opportunity to gain valuable insights that are difficult to obtain elsewhere. Mentors not only provided them with a detailed list of related professions but also analyzed in detail the advantages and potential "disadvantages" of each profession. For high school students who are still growing, this is an even more valuable opportunity for self-reflection and discovering interests, helping them clarify their career direction and life goals.

Students generally believe that this career planning activity not only has extremely high educational value but is also highly practical. It provides them with multiple future career choices that match their mentors' specialties, enabling them to plan their futures earlier. At the same time, they were also fortunate to listen to their classmates share different books, gaining new knowledge and inspiration from them. Overall, this event has benefited every student greatly.
