Junior High School Science Group: Expert Lecture Series for the Science Festival - From "Zombie Plants" to the Mysteries of Nature.
On May 7th, research scientist Huang Weijie from the Molecular Plant Science Excellence Innovation Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences brought a truly enlightening science lecture to our 8th graders. Perhaps before attending the session, our students might have thought of the idea of “zombie plants” as crazy and unrealistic. However, once the lecture began, they were all astounded by the beauty, complexity and wonder of nature. The lecture hall was filled with students listening attentively, all deeply immersed in the expert's lecture.
Through vivid sharing and interactive sessions, our students learned how phytoplasma, a bacterial pathogen, infects thousands of plants through effector proteins, triggering profound and dramatic changes in the host plant’s development process. This discussion drew a parallel with what our students are currently learning in science class: protein synthesis and its functions, as well as gene mutations. The lecture was thereby able to effectively enhance our students’ understanding of the content taught in class . It also allowed them to delve deeper into more complex and profound knowledge as a form of extension, sparking their curiosity towards botany and the countless sources of life found everywhere in the world around us.
After the lecture, the students in the auditorium were left entranced and wanting more. Through the interaction and communication with the expert, our students gained valuable knowledge, improved their academic literacy, and cultivated an incessantly investigative spirit as independent learners.
