Grade 11 Assembly: Sharing on 3D Modeling

May 13, 2024

On the morning of May 9, students of Grade 11 gathered in the Xianmian Building Annex Auditorium for the weekly Thursday assembly. Alex from 11(1) came upon the stage to share his experience with one of his hobbies: 3D modeling and computer-generated art.

The presentation began with a brief rundown on the general process to create a scene in the 3D software “Blender,” including planning, modeling, texturing, lighting, and more. Each phase, in itself, is an expansive skill which is hard to master. Alex then shared what he believed was the most unique aspect of this hobby, which is the blend of creativity in art and computational thinking. Many processes, such as texturing, require data manipulation, vector math, or other such knowledge. Moreover, hobbies such as this are able to influence one’s personal development.

Alex explained how, as a student who was always treated as STEM-oriented, this hobby provided a more familiar entrance for him into artistic expression, opening himself up to a field he would otherwise have avoided. As he displayed some of his previous work, he wrapped up the presentation with a reflection on the true value of a hobby, urging students to focus more on personal growth rather than external wins.
