Conversations on Life and Society - First Lunchtime Discussion for High School Students from Both Divisions

April 3, 2025

During lunch on March 31, high school students from both the Local Division and the International Division gathered for an enjoyable Lunchtime Discussion, engaging in themes of “We, Life.” and “We, Society.”

The discussion began with an ice-breaking session where each student introduced themselves. Sharing their lifestyles and hobbies ignited sparks of thought, creating a lively and harmonious atmosphere.

During the “We, Life” discussion, students explored the question: If you have 8 days a week, what would you do for the extra day? Students shared diverse perspectives on life. Some preferred using the additional time to develop personal interests, others highlighted the importance of rest in balancing life, while some chose to immerse themselves in academic pursuits further. Amid the variety of responses, students recognized their differences and found common ground, expressing in unison, “I never thought life could be lived this way!”

In the “We, Society” discussion, students shared views on the thought-provoking question raised by a BBC article: Do today's young people still need to look for a basic internship in small businesses or even take on manual labor jobs before they go out to "conquer the world"? Many shared insights from the school’s “Labor Experience Week,” emphasizing that “hands-on work fosters respect for all professions” and “experiencing labor firsthand deepens our understanding of its challenges.” Others pointed out that “internships in small businesses or manual work offer a window into the social division of labor, cultivating a sense of responsibility.” One student added, “In an era of globalization, grassroots experience helps break the elite bubble and fosters genuine empathy.” The discussion concluded with a shared consensus: regardless of future career paths, “experiencing life’s hardships before entering society is crucial,” as labor serves as a means of intellectual growth and a profound understanding of social integrity.

This Lunchtime Discussion encouraged open conversations and diverse perspectives, strengthening bonds between students from both divisions. As the event ended, students exchanged gifts, and look forward to more opportunities for connection. The school will continue to provide such platforms, empowering students to broaden their horizons and develop into future leaders with both local roots and global vision.
