Grade 9 Assembly: Introduction to the Debate Society

On May 10, the Grade 9 students once again gathered in the Zhentao lecture hall. Amanda Ye from class 9-12 came up to the stage to introduce the SHSID Debate Society. To begin, Amanda shared how the club was created as well as how their usual sessions are run. This club started in January 2021 and is led by Ms. Yang as leading guidance counselor. Collaborating with several diverse clubs, the Debate Society contributed to events such as Pi Day, MIX Day, Physics Day, Bit Day, and many more. Not only did the Debate Team participate in various events within our school, but they have also achieved multiple awards and recognition in regional and international competitions.

Next, Amanda gave a simple overview on the goals and lessons in the debate club. The training sessions of the club provide members with guidance and practice. They review past competitions during which they reflect on their performances and try to improve their own skills. Other than attending competitions and training, the Debate Society members hold lots of outdoors events such as walking the local streets of the competition area and enjoying lovely picnics under the blossoms on campus. Amanda shared how their team often turns discussion sessions into lively chatter, showing the bond within their team.

Lastly, the alumnus of the Debate Society shared their reflections on their time in this club. From 2023, Nancy shared how the Debate Society has changed her path in life in several ways. Her experience in debate opened her to a broader perspective in life. She mentioned that the skills she built up in debate allowed her to remain calm in events like speeches and interviews. From 2021, Annie believes that she has developed a more thorough, comprehensive, and multi-dimensional thinking path. While debate can bring her honors, success, and personal growth; the most precious part is her glowing teammates. We hope more students who are interested in debate can join the SHSID Debate Society to create bonds with students alike and achieve their dreams.
