Students Visited the Digital Innovation Challenge at NYU Shanghai
On April 26, 2024, 9th and 10th grade students from Shanghai High School International Division went to New York University Shanghai to participate in the Digital Innovation Challenge (DIC). With the theme of “Artificial Intelligence Empowering Personalized Education”, this year's competition brought together teams from universities to show the innovative picture of the integration of AI and education through technology solutions.
At the event, university students presented their research projects. One team developed an intelligent reading tool using eye-tracking and attention analysis technology to monitor students' focus levels in real time, providing data-driven insights to enhance learning efficiency. The NYU Shanghai team created a "Smart Learning Companion" system by embedding their self-developed large language model into the campus network. This tool automatically extracts key course concepts and generates interactive Q&A sessions to support academic learning. Another groundbreaking project reimagined traditional teaching methods by designing an AI character interacting as a "student." Through a "reverse teaching" mechanism, students act as mentors to educate the AI system. The platform then evaluates learners' mastery of subjects by analyzing their explanations' logical coherence and completeness, delivering visual feedback on learning outcomes.
The opening ceremony featured a welcome speech by Jeff Lehman, Vice Chancellor of NYU Shanghai, followed by an introduction to the university's AI research center by Wilson Tam, Deputy Director of the AI Research Center. Leo Shao, the student chair of the organizing committee, outlined this year's DIC agenda and competition highlights. Professor Xia Zhihong concluded the ceremony with a keynote speech exploring AI-driven education's latest trends and challenges. During the networking session, SHSID students engaged in lively discussions with university teams regarding technical implementations and real-world applications. The event culminated in an awards ceremony.
Through this visit, students gained profound insights into the diverse applications of AI in education while drawing inspiration from project design, presentation techniques, and industry-academia collaboration approaches. Participants expressed enthusiasm about applying these innovative strategies to their research endeavors.
