Glowing Youth, Blossoming Wisdom – English Speech Contest for Sixth and Seventh Graders
On the afternoon of April 24th, teachers and students from the sixth and seventh grades gathered at the Hsi Building Auditorium to witness the thrilling final rounds of the annual English speech contest. This competition not only provided a platform for students to showcase themselves and enhance their English expression abilities but also promoted their in-depth thinking on some of our time’s most pressing topics.
This year, during the preliminary round, students engaged in heated discussions through classroom debates, ultimately selecting six outstanding contestants from each grade to advance to the final round. During this round, the contestants’ performances were eye-catching.
Sixth-grade participants delivered speeches presenting keen personal insights. Contestants from the S and S+ levels focused on how external interventions such as limiting screen time and establishing reward systems could guide children towards healthier lifestyles and learning attitudes, emphasizing the role of parents as rule-makers and motivators in children's growth. Meanwhile, contestants from the H and H+ levels utilized scientific research to support their arguments regarding the benefits of public transportation and video games, as well of moderation for individual development and social welfare.
Seventh-grade speakers explored the multidimensional impacts of technological development from various perspectives: some concentrated on technology ethics, raising profound questions about social equity and privacy protection while acknowledging the potential for innovation; other speakers depicted scenes of autonomous driving reshaping future transportation, highlighting its revolutionary significance in enhancing travel safety and comfort; some, too, presented forward-looking ideas about using artificial intelligence to decode cosmic signals, imagining new eras of interstellar discovery in the exploration of extraterrestrial life.
The brilliant speeches delivered by the contestants on stage won rounds of applause from audience members throughout the auditorium, not only showcasing their solid language skills but also demonstrating their ability to think deeply and broaden their intellectual horizons. After careful deliberation, the judges announced the winners of the competition on the spot. Our sincerest congratulations hereby go out to all the winning students!
