Middle School Science Department: G8 Students Explore NCBI Database, Embarking on a New Journey in Scientific Research

May 12, 2025

On May 7th, eighth-grade students participated in a unique bioinformatics practical lesson. After learning about genetics, including genes, DNA, and chromosomes, the students explored the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database, experiencing the joy of being "young scientists."

The course was divided into two parts: In the first part, students explored how the NCBI database organizes DNA sequences, evolutionary relationships, and scientific literature. The second part was more challenging, as students used the BLAST search tool to identify the nucleotide sequence of an unknown insect endosymbiont.

"Now I understand how scientists study genes!" one student excitedly shared. By independently using the database, abstract theories became tangible and accessible. This experiment not only strengthened students' understanding of genetic concepts but also further sparked their interest in the interdisciplinary fields of life science and information technology.

The Science Department will continue to promote cross-disciplinary integration, offering more practical courses like this one to cultivate students' comprehensive abilities and lay a foundation for their future development in cutting-edge fields such as life sciences and bioinformatics.
