Crafting the Art of Teaching — Record of the 2025 SHSID Educators for Future Award (Middle and Primary School) Preliminary Round

May 14, 2025

On May 10, the preliminary round of the 2025 SHSID Educators for Future Award (Middle and

Primary School) was successfully held in the Hsi Building. This year's theme highlighted the core

professional competencies young teachers must possess to adapt to the demands of modern

education. Coinciding with the school's 160th anniversary, this quadrennial event saw its largest

participation to date.

The competition consisted of two segments: lesson presentation and impromptu English speech.

Both targeted the core competencies required of young teachers as future educators. One participant shared, "When I got the presentation topic, my mind was racing. I had to quickly outline clear

objectives while designing engaging activities. I hope to showcase my best work." Another

admitted, "I was nervous at first, but once I structured my approach using familiar methods, creative ideas started flowing, and I regained confidence." This blend of tension and inspiration captured the essence of the competition.

Preparing without internet or digital devices but only pen and paper, participants demonstrated solid foundational skills. Some teachers focused on how they would guide students in deep text

interpretation through carefully designed chains of questions, aiming to foster critical thinking.

Others created improvised teaching aids on the spot to visualize abstract concepts. Several also

incorporated interactive strategies like Gallery Walk to demonstrate cross-disciplinary teaching

approaches. In the English speech segment, many participants articulated their perspectives on

assigned topics with clarity and fluency.

The judging panels from various subject groups maintained objective and professional standards

throughout the evaluation process, with particular emphasis on "the scientific rigor of lesson design and effectiveness of classroom implementation." Judges from the Mathematics/Science group and Middle School Chinese group specifically praised participants for their whiteboard design and the

mutually supportive learning atmosphere during the competition.

The preliminary round concluded successfully. Principal Liu, present at the event, commended the

teachers for "demonstrating both professional competence and personal flair," while expressing his

anticipation for even more outstanding performances in the finals on May 24. "May this year’s

competition become a treasured part of our 160th anniversary celebrations," he remarked.
