Middle School Science Department: Decoding the Mysteries of Life, Safeguarding Adolescent Growth
To enrich the Science Festival activities and broaden students’ scientific horizons, the Science department specially tailored two high-quality thematic lectures for seventh and eighth-grade students on May 14th and 15th. Professor Lu Daru, a distinguished professor and doctoral supervisor at Fudan University, and Dr. Ma Yinzhu from the Shanghai Mental Health Center, respectively, brought wonderful knowledge feasts to the students on the themes of gene science and adolescent mental health.
In the lecture “Genes and Human Health” held on the 14th, Professor Lu Daru gave an in-depth explanation from three dimensions. In the “Gene - The Code of Life” section, Professor Lu vividly explained the mystery of the genetic code using a DNA double helix structure model. The section “Genes and Human Traits and Diseases” demonstrated the association between genes and diseases through examples such as hemophilia and color blindness. Finally, in the chapter “Gene-Science and Technology Benefit Mankind,” the application prospects of gene editing technology in disease treatment were highlighted. The interactive session was full of climaxes. The questions raised by the students, such as “the possibility of gene therapy for psychological diseases” and “the decisive influence of genes on behavior,” demonstrated keen scientific thinking. Professor Lu’s professional and humorous answers won rounds of applause.
On the 15th, Dr. Ma Yinzhu’s “Compulsory Course for Adolescence” was equally exciting. Dr. Ma answered questions for seventh-grade students in a professional and friendly language. The lecture revolved around three major themes: When analyzing “the ‘secret troubles’ of adolescence,” Dr. Ma used the metaphor of “emotional roller coaster” to vividly illustrate the impact of hormone changes. When discussing “the ‘wise distance’ of interpersonal communication,” the boundary of friendship was demonstrated through situational dramas. In the special topic of “Adolescent Interpersonal Relationships,” Dr. Ma gave professional guidance on how to establish healthy peer relationships, emphasizing the importance of “mutual respect and common growth.” Dr. Ma gave professional advice from a psychological perspective on the various confusions encountered by students in interpersonal communication, and the atmosphere of on-site interaction was warm.
In the future, the Science Group will, as always, invite experts in various fields to enter the campus, and through more diversified science popularization activities, bring more high-quality learning opportunities for students, cultivate innovative thinking, and help students grow in an all-round way.
