History and Geography Department: Grade 11 Student Won Second Prize in Shanghai Meteorological Innovation Competition

May 27, 2025

The 3rd Shanghai Campus Meteorological Science and Innovation Competition, held in conjunction with the 1st Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integrated Demonstration Zone Meteorological Innovation Competition, successfully concluded on May 24th. The event was co-hosted by the Chinese Meteorological Society, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, and other leading institutions. Open to primary and secondary schools across Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta demonstration zone, the competition attracted over 58,000 students from more than 580 schools, making it one of the most competitive and influential contests of its kind. In this highly competitive event, Tiffany, an 11th grader, stood out with her exceptional performance in the research paper submission and final defense session, earning her a Second Prize .

Tiffany's research paper, titled “Impact Analysis of Typhoon Pulasan and Disaster Prevention Implications: A Case Study of Shanghai and Its Surrounding Areas,” is grounded in real meteorological data and GIS-based spatial analysis. The study investigates the typhoon's trajectory and intensity changes, examines its effects on urban meteorological conditions and the water level of Taihu Lake, and proposes multiple practical recommendations for extreme weather disaster response. This research originated from her coursework in the geography elective “Human Geography: Applications of GIS and Remote Sensing Technology.” Under the guidance of her instructor, Tiffany integrated key modules such as QGIS application, meteorological and geographic data analysis, remote sensing interpretation, and urban planning. Through this project-based learning approach, she successfully transformed her coursework into a high-quality academic paper that received professional recognition from experts in the fields of meteorology and geography.

Tiffany’s achievement not only highlights her academic rigor and scientific curiosity but also reflects the history and geography department's commitment to integrating geographic education with technological innovation and interdisciplinary learning.
