Grade 10 Outdoor Adventure Program Successfully Held
On the morning of May 28, Grade 10 students from SHSID departed for Anji's Wufeng Mountain Sports Village, embarking on a unique expedition that blended outdoor adventure, cultural immersion, and natural beauty. This tranquil retreat provided students with the chance to test their physical limits among mountain streams and birdsong, while also fostering teamwork beneath the shade of bamboo groves scented with tea leaves.
Surrounded by Wufeng Mountain’s verdant landscape, students strapped on safety harnesses and practiced carabiner use before stepping into the treetop challenge. With wooden planks beneath their feet and a canopy of tangled branches overhead, each step was a test of courage and composure. As they transitioned to the rock-climbing segment, students gripped rocky crevices and pressed against vertical cliff faces—sweat and mountain breeze intermingling—leaving behind both physical and symbolic marks of youth. Reaching the summit bell, they rang it with pride, a reminder that the journey upward always holds the answers nature keeps. They carefully navigated suspended rope bridges, balance beams, and swinging logs, steadily building confidence and coordination with every move.
Anji’s winding mountain roads awoke in the morning mist. Students mounted their bicycles, wheels tracing through bamboo-filtered sunlight, accompanied by the rhythmic hum of chains and gears. Climbing hills tensed their muscles, and sweat dotted the winding asphalt; downhill, their jackets fluttered as they sped through a sea of green. Along the way, students encouraged each other, taking in the scenery while experiencing the thrill of speed and freedom.
Carefully treading over slippery stones, students followed the upstream course of Wufeng’s mountain creek. With cold water lapping at their ankles, they advanced under their instructors’ guidance. When hesitation arose between mossy boulders, shared glances and outstretched hands pushed them forward. Eager for adventure, students leapt into the lake in a spirited celebration of nature and courage. The activity concluded with a lakeside rest, where students dried off under the sun before continuing their day of exploration. The murmuring stream, shimmering light on stone, and hidden forest paths seemed to whisper encouragement—nature’s way of cheering on the brave.
Armed with maps and a sense of curiosity, students ventured into the untouched green heart of Wufeng. The rustle of fallen leaves, sunlight speckling through the canopy, and birdsong guided their steps. Navigating the terrain, they applied geography knowledge and practiced collaborative decision-making. By journey’s end, the footprints left behind became their silent tribute to the land that challenged and inspired them.
The evening bonfire on the second night proved to be a trip highlight. Flames flickered against smiling faces, casting a warm glow over the open-air stage. A spirited Uyghur dance brought the crowd to life, followed by a choral performance of Warrior of the Mind, whose mythological themes echoed the trip’s core values of intellectual curiosity and personal challenge. In a joyous ring, students moved with exuberant jumps, their laughter and joy echoing through the open air. As embers floated skyward, the students' talent and energy lit up the night like stars.
Stretching across ten miles, Wufeng Mountain rises in five peaks like a screen of lotus blossoms—an image praised in both ancient texts like the Classic of Mountains and Seas and Taiping Huanyu Ji. Students hiked past the famed "Little Red Cliffs" and an ancient temple rich with tradition. As they explored, they found themselves transported into scenes worthy of classical poetry—scenes that echoed Liu Yuxi’s reflections on time, history, and wandering sages.
For SHSID’s tenth-grade students, the journey to Anji was more than a break from textbooks. It was a chance to rediscover the bond between humanity and nature, challenging themselves in the wild, building trust through teamwork, and reflecting on growth in quiet moments under the trees. Furthermore, it helped students appreciate the materials and possessions in their daily life even more. As the school year continues, this immersive experience, full of adventure and introspection, will remain a cherished chapter in their high school story—one that shaped not only their memories but their character as well.
