Middle School Hosts Vibrant "Reading Carnival" Series ——Cultivating a love for reading beyond the classroom
June 6, 2025, the SHSID Middle School recently concluded its year-long "Reading Carnival" event series with a grand finale celebration on June 6, themed "Read · Share · Grow." The program engaged students across all grades through its innovative House system (Azure Long, Vermilion Phoenix, White Tiger), fostering a campus-wide reading culture.
Phased Activities: Building a Reading Community
The carefully-structured campaign began with foundational projects:
· "Discover Great Books" Exhibition: Student- and teacher-curated book recommendation displays transformed hallways into literary galleries, featuring both classic and contemporary titles.
· "Brilliant Pens" Reading Report Showcase: The students’ depth of literary analysis shone through the award-winning book reports they produced, each revealing critical insights gleaned from close reading of great texts.
· "Creative Flow" Competitions: The "Joy of Reading Cup" writing contest and 8th-grade poetry contest yielded eloquent works and demonstrated how reading fuels creativity.
Grand Finale: Literary Salon Extravaganza
The carnival’s climax immersed students in a dynamic celebration of reading:
· Immersive Decor: Giant signature walls, towering House banners, and book-themed installations created a joyful and scholarly atmosphere.
· Thoughtful Welcome: Students received activity guides and drew randomized team cards to win reading-themed gifts (custom bookmarks, reading lights, or book stands).
· Interactive Challenges:
• Emoji Book Title Guessing: Hilarious facial expressions sparked recognition of literary classics.
• Book Charades: Teams acted out scenes from novels in lively inter-House competitions.
• "Your Reading Keyword": Teacher Mr. Dave’s reflection on "friendship in literature" drew resonant applause.
· Student Spotlight: Eighth-grade author and student Feng shared her creative journey and distributed copies of her award-winning work Old Dreams Resurfacing in gift bags.
· Lucky Draws: Spontaneous prize giveaways of curated books and cultural keepsakes energized the crowd.
Principal’s Vision: Reading as a Lifelong Compass
Principal Liu Lian applauded the event’s innovative and communal spirit and expressed an encouraging aspiration for the students: “Books carry us farthest. True reading expands our horizons and deepens life’s meaning. May this carnival plant seeds of curiosity that grow into lifelong companions, illuminating your path with wisdom.”
This year's House-based “Reading Carnival,” from its foundational scholastic activities to the climactic salon party, also reflected teachers' dedication and creativity at every turn. The event not only effectively ignited junior students' passion for reading and cultivated strong reading habits, but also significantly strengthened House cohesion and belonging through engaging team activities and a warm, shared atmosphere. It fully embodied our educational philosophy of holistic development through joyful learning.
A scholarly campus nurtures wisdom-filled growth. The journey of reading never ends."
