Puxi Campus Grade 1: Childlike Wonder, Blossoming Words — “Story King” Competition

June 26, 2025

Stories are magical keys to every child’s childhood — they open doors to the wondrous world of imagination. Through stories, children experience the beauty of language and quietly grow amidst each unfolding plot. Warmhearted tales teach them kindness and love; adventures ignite their courage and sense of responsibility; fantastical narratives awaken boundless creativity. Stories bring laughter and surprise, and help children learn empathy and reflection.

To encourage students to express their love for storytelling, Grade 1 at SHSID Puxi Campus launched a special event: the “Story King” competition. All students enthusiastically participated, vividly presenting their favorite tales. Some delivered heartfelt accounts of the origin of zongzi, their eyes gleaming with admiration when describing the patriotic poet Qu Yuan’s sacrifice for his country. Others brought laughter with expressive renditions of Little Red Riding Hood, switching voices effortlessly between the grandmother and the big bad wolf. One student chose the ancient fable Buying the Case and Returning the Pearl, skillfully highlighting its irony while sparking thoughtful discussion.

Each performance was a unique blend of creativity and care. Some students crafted their own props, others paired storytelling with expressive gestures, breathing fresh life into familiar stories. In the end, every class selected one outstanding “Story King” to represent them in the grade-level showcase, where young voices continued to tell vivid and heartfelt stories.

On the afternoon of June 6, the grade-level “Story King” showcase began amidst eager anticipation. Eight outstanding storytellers, nominated by their classes, took the stage and, through vibrant language and captivating performances, led teachers and students into a realm of imagination.

Before the official competition began, an interactive game — “Guess the Story from the Picture” — warmed up the crowd. With hands shooting up enthusiastically, students quickly recognized classic stories such as The Thirsty Crow and The Monkey King’s Havoc in Heaven, demonstrating their rich reading experience and sharp observation skills.

As the audience applauded warmly, each of the eight storytellers stepped onto the stage in turn. Though young in age, their voices were filled with charm and passion. They shared lively fairy tales, thought-provoking fables, and awe-inspiring myths. Every story had its own flavor — some evoked laughter, some offered deep insights, others sparked imagination or touched the heart. With expressive language, vivid facial expressions, and natural body movements, these young narrators transported the audience into their wondrous story worlds, winning waves of applause and cheers.

The true magic of stories lies in their power to transcend time and space, illuminating the hearts of children. The “Story King” event not only showcased the students’ language skills and performance talents, but also revealed their rich imagination and sensitive perceptions of life. Each remarkable moment became a shining memory of their childhood. May stories continue to accompany every child, sowing the seeds of love and wisdom along their journey, and blooming into flowers of dreams.
