2025 The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Adventure Journey: A Transformative Experience
On July 2, 2025, eleven students from SHSID embarked on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Adventurous Journey. What began as a challenging physical trek quickly evolved into a profound lesson in resilience, teamwork, and personal growth.
The participants were divided into two groups, each with a different goal. Despite their various objectives, both groups hiked under the scorching July sun, carrying all the 15 to 20 kilograms of supplies they needed. Little did they know that this journey would change their perspective on the world.
Like cooking a meal, the cooking method and raw materials will change the flavor a lot. So, the AJ journey required thorough preparation beforehand. The students planned their supplies, assigned roles, and mapped out their routes. With three waypoints and 5-6 people per group, teamwork was essential to ensure no one was left behind. Factors like time, latitude, and direction were crucial, as they directly impacted their routes. The students also created detailed lists of necessary items and food, as the journey provided no amenities like a summer camp. Safety precautions were a top priority, and everyone contributed to the planning process. Though mistakes were made and information was sometimes incomplete, the students’ resilience and determination kept them moving forward. Finally, they were ready to begin their practice journey adventure.

The transition from city life to a survival mission was shocking. The first two days were hot, sticky, and exhausting. The endless road seemed to drain their energy, but the positive voices of group members kept everyone going. Laughter eventually replaced exhaustion, and the sight of each waypoint boosted their spirits. This excitement, earned through hard work, was unlike any other.
After the practice journey, the qualifying expedition began at Hui Hang Ancient Road. The students shifted from paved roads to rugged mountain paths, with the heat making every step feel heavier. They walked in a straight line, communicating constantly to stay on schedule. Interviewing local villagers added a new dimension to the journey. The villagers’ fascinating stories and kind gestures made the experience unforgettable.
On the last day, the explorers passed through traditional villages near Taiji Lake. Farmers listened to music and chatted, creating a harmonious rural scene. The students marveled at the farmlands, a stark contrast to the packaged produce they were used to. Finally, they arrived at the final stop, which was a modern village. The whole journey was bittersweet, but the students were motivated to finish strongly. As they boarded the bus, waving to their instructors, they reflected on the meaningful experience.
Walking 10km daily was tough, but it taught the students the value of determination. Yunmin from the SIXY team said, “I wanted to quit, but my team’s determination kept me going.” The Silver Award AJ was more than just a task; it was a gift of new perspectives. For future participants, remember that the peaks are only possible because of the valleys. The real adventure lies in self-discovery and a new understanding of the world and yourself.
