Primary School Math Department: Mathematics Summer Project Exhibition
This September, SHSID once again echoed with laughter and excitement as Grades 1 to 5 students proudly brought back their mathematics summer projects. These works were not merely exercises in calculation, they were vibrant expressions of creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Each project reflected the students' growing confidence in applying mathematical knowledge to the wider world.
This year's projects were designed with innovation at the core. Moving beyond traditional worksheets, the assignment design also integrates multiple dimensions, letting students experience the charm of mathematics through hands-on activities and critical thinking. Each level demonstrated a clear developmental progression, offering a vivid glimpse into students' intellectual and personal growth.
Grade 2
Second graders embarked on a fascinating journey with their project "Money Around the World." Choosing a country of interest, they researched its coins and banknotes, explored their purchasing power. Students were delighted to find that 100 RMB could buy very different things around the globe. In the process, they also learned about the symbols and history embedded in money. Mathematics came alive as abstract numbers transformed into colorful currency, and exchange rates became gateways to cultural exploration.
During the showcase, their creative displays reinforced the idea that mathematics is deeply intertwined with everyday life and global awareness. This project allows students to learn through play and grow through learning, broadening their international perspective while making math education.
Grade 3
For third graders, mathematics turned entrepreneurial. Students imagined themselves as pet store owners, complete with shop names, logos, and floor plans sketched on A3 paper. They used multiplication and division to label animal areas, calculate totals, manage grooming service fees, and tally customer bills.
The projects were as imaginative as they were accurate. From neatly written equations to whimsical yet practical layouts, students demonstrated both precision in computation and creativity in design. Through this simulation, they discovered how classroom skills translate directly into real-world problem-solving.
Grade 4
Fourth graders were given two pathways: conducting research on great mathematicians or applying geometry to perspective drawing. In the Mathematician Study, students produced research reports through reading materials, organizing life events, and summarizing contributions enriched with hand-drawn portraits, and summaries of their contributions, which demonstrates students' exceptional interdisciplinary integration capabilities.
In Perspective Drawing, students applied principles of geometry to create striking street scenes, interiors, and landscapes. Some pieces revealed impressive artistic talent, drawing admiration from teachers and peers alike.
Grade 5
Fifth-grade projects emphasized independence, variety, and real-world application. Students had a wider range of choices, resulting in the emergence of numerous remarkable works.
Some recorded videos, while others developed board and card games. Pop-up books cleverly combined artistic design with problem-solving, while posters and poems captured abstract concepts. These projects not only demonstrated knowledge mastery but also showcased critical thinking, creativity, and growing confidence in self-expression.
At SHSID, mathematics education goes beyond formulas and calculations. The summer's projects not only strengthened core knowledge but also encouraged students to connect math with other fields. Over the break, they sustained their learning rhythm while igniting curiosity and creativity. We look forward to their continued exploration of the wider world of mathematics.
