The Resonance of Physics and Biology - 2024 Bio x Phy Subject Week

April 29, 2024

From April 22nd to April 26th, the Biology x Physics Subject Week with the theme of “The Resonance of Physics and Biology” was successfully held on campus in the beautiful spring weather. This event not only set up a grand interdisciplinary communication platform, but also led students and teachers to explore the infinite possibilities of the intersection of biology and physics, and attracted the participation of many teachers and students.

At the beginning of the activity, two exciting lectures unveiled the prelude to the cutting-edge technology of biophysics for teachers and students. On April 22, the first lecture was centered on bio-3D printing technology, and the guest speaker, Prof.Wang Jinwu of Shanghai Jiaotong University, analyzed how this technology can be used in the fields of orthopaedic therapy, high-throughput drug screening and so on. Through vivid cases and explanations, the audience gained a more comprehensive understanding of the principles, development status and future trends of bio-3D printing technology.

The second lecture on April 23, titled “Physical Magic: Uncovering the Microscopic World of Life - A Glimpse of Biophysics”, was delivered by Prof. Ding Yu of Fudan University. Using rich images, Prof. Ding demonstrated how biophysics can reveal the mystery of life phenomena and analyze the structure and function of biomolecules in the context of well-known diseases. The lecture brought the audience into the marvelous microscopic world and let them feel the magical sparks generated by the collision of physics and biology.

A series of colorful activities held by student clubs were set up in this event: the plant growing area of Cyano Club displayed various plants cultivated by students, which demonstrated the practicality and fun of biology, while the charity sale and quiz activities injected more interactivity and entertainment into the event.

The Scientific Phenomena Exhibition organized by STEMDoge Club attracted many students, and its online quiz game is now available, students are welcome to try their hand and compete with other biophysics enthusiasts on the same stage!

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the presentation of student projects. In the lobby of the Zhentao Building, students' ingenious ecological campus models and bionics works were displayed. These works not only demonstrated the students' deep understanding and innovative thinking of biology and physics, but also reflected their active exploration and practice in interdisciplinary practical application. Numerous visitors came to watch and praise the creativity and talent of the students.

When the ideas and techniques of physics are applied to decode the world of biology, when a wide range of life wonders inspires the study of physics, and when the wisdom of physics and the mysteries of biology are jointly appreciated and explored, it is believed that students will be able to feel how the two relatively independent disciplines intertwine and resonate, and mutually promote each other to develop. It is also expected that students will open their minds and integrate them to contribute to the progress of human cognition about science and technology in the future.
