Puxi Campus G6: Parents' Meeting
In the golden autumn, students embark on a new academic journey. On September 17, 2025, the Grade 6 Parents' Meeting at SHSID was convened in the grand West Auditorium of the Puxi Campus. The event aimed to deepen home-school communication, build consensus on education, and jointly support students in their smooth transition from primary school to middle school.
The meeting commenced under the chairmanship of Ms. Cheng Liyan, Grade 6 supervisor. Ms. Cheng first outlined the agenda and reviewed the outstanding achievements of the middle school students over the past academic year in music, sports, art, academic competitions, and technological innovation. These accomplishments vividly demonstrated the school's educational philosophy of "Deepening Exploration and Integrating Chinese and Western Perspectives" and its tangible outcomes. Ms. Cheng elaborated on how the core objectives of cultivating "independent learners" and "responsible global citizens" are integrated into every aspect of daily teaching practice. This encompassed curriculum design, CME curriculum, teaching evaluation systems, as well as the practical application of the ONE system and the LC learning platform.
Subsequently, subject leaders took the stage to deliver insightful presentations showcasing their disciplines' unique strengths and depth. Ms. Chen Fan, Head of SHSID Middle School Chinese Department, detailed the tiered teaching system and competency requirements of our International Division's Chinese curriculum, emphasizing the comprehensive cultivation of students' linguistic, cultural, critical- thinking, and aesthetic abilities through diverse interdisciplinary activities. Mr. Jason Brigham, Vice Head of SHSID Middle School English Department, underscored the central role of critical-thinking and digital literacy in English learning. Ms. Zheng Wen Yin, Head of SHSID Middle School Mathematics Department, highlighted the importance of mathematical logic and reflective skills, offering students clear learning pathways and recommendations.
Mr. Jacob Newman, Vice Head of SHSID Middle School History Department, introduced the Grade 6 history curriculum, highlighting inquiry-based learning to cultivate students' text comprehension, note-taking, and evidence-based argumentation skills. This approach guides students to understand diverse cultures and reflect on connections between past and present. Ms. Du Jiani, Head of SHSID Middle School Science Department, advocated interest-driven learning through rich experimental design and STEM activities to ignite students' passion and creativity in science, embodying the philosophy of "learning through inquiry". Finally, Edward Key, Assistant Principal of English curriculum, introduced additional support and extracurricular enrichment for sixth-grade students, emphasizing that English education prioritizes personal growth alongside academic achievement.
In the concluding remarks, Mr. Shen Tianyuan, Vice Principal of SHSID Middle and Primary School, elaborated on the family education guidance based on the concept of "moderate parenting". Drawing on psychologist Judith Y. Locke's theory to urge parents to strike a balance between nurturing and letting go, he demonstrated how this concept can foster resilient, independent, and confident children. The development of CME curriculum, alongside the Grade 8 service-learning program, displayed the school's long-standing commitment and strong foundation in character education and social practice.
The sixth-grade parents' meeting concluded in an atmosphere of openness and candor. It marked not only a new beginning for home-school collaboration but also a vivid demonstration of the educational community in action. The school will continue to work hand in hand with parents to provide solid support and guidance for students' growth, empowering them to confidently embark on their new academic journey and build momentum for the road ahead.
